Post by moggie-tom »

Just out of interest, can ANPR cameras etc... pick up black and silver numberplates same as they do with modern ones?

I've heard they cant, but it may be an urban legend.
Don't fancy being the one to find out either.
ANPR may be different to speed cameras too, as they have more time to do the recognition.

When you take a picture of your car with your digital camera does your number plate show up then......

Early ANPR cameras couldn't pick up black & silver numberplates but improved technology means that they can now.

That's a very authoritative answer, how about speed cameras?

Well I gathered that much but my digital camera can't actually 'read' the letters can it? I didn't know if they could still read the silver letters on a black background compared to modern plates with black letters on white or yellow blackgrounds.

Believe me - all types of cameras can read all types of number plates - even the ones that are supposedly "highly reflective" so they blind the flash when the Gatso goes off

I agree. I have attended a few local shows and they have had a "Camera Van" on site giving demo's. I also heard that they couldn't read old style plates but a quick look inside one of these vans and they can read anything from a great distance too.

If the ANPR fails to pick out the number a human can usually read it off the photo. Mind 'ow you go sir! :)
