morris dealer clock

Postby ian.mcdougall » Sun Jan 28, 2018 10:24 pm

Cheeky subject line but I thought it might spark more replies
I have dug out an Austin dealer clock that I have it has a smiths sectric mechanism and i want to reproduce a Morris version. I know its a long shot but does anyone have one i can get a few design ideas from or a picture. Its a glass disc with the design printed or sprayed on the back. I have purchased a smiths wall clock to use the mechanism from.and will have to think about reproducing the design

Hi David
I have that picture but the hands would have to go through the bull, also its a bit complicated to reproduce on rear of glass so was thinking more of Morris replacing Austin and a Morris quote at bottom as per Austin,if i can find one.The way of reproducing the artwork i was thinking of, was with stencils applied on back and aerosol sprayed

As a suggestion albeit rather unimaginative, wasn't "Quality First" a Morris advertising slogan?

Another suggestion then. Have a browse through eBay for people selling old sales brochures. Their pics may give you an idea of font/lettering style etc.

I found some old ads some might apply to Australia but the slogans are good

"Quality First" will be easiest from that selection.

The occupants of the MM Low-light look rather small, don't they?

That woman in the front passenger seat of the saloon looks like a 1940's movie star! Fantastic! :D

I have a couple of dealer clocks in my Morris automobilia collection. There may also be some information in the Morris Dealerships publications I have. I will try to take some photos if I can work out how to download them on to here, or you could send me your email address.

I have finally made the repro Morris dealer clock from an idea from an Austin dealer clock that i have.I got the correct smiths sectric movement from e-bay (I also bought a second clock so another different clock could be on the cards) but it had the hour and minute hands missing and the second hand was missing the long part .So I had to make copies from the Austin clock .My idea was to have a mirror image stencil cut from vehicle graphics vinyl on a computer stick to the back of the glass face, and then peel off different colour sections and aerosol spray to build up the image, but the graphics guys could not cut the vinyl as the letters were too small so i had to stick the vinyl to the back of the glass and a paper print on that and then freehand cut the stencil out.
I am very pleased with the result although i don't think there was a Morris dealer clock made ,unless anyone knows different.
I would like to thanks anyone who offered suggestions on what form the clock would take .
also Mike (I think from admin) for finding a temporary solution to the problem of not being able to post photo's, hope you enjoy Minors on Tour

Was wondering how this project was progressing. Glad you've got it finished. Looks very authentic too :)

Put it somewhere dusty for a couple of months... maybe lie it up on exposed rafters in the garage roof-space...?
