Prolific scammer spotted back on ebay, has a Minor advert. I've reported it but expect much more stupidity. Ads always have a gmail address in the description. beware.

The main thing I notice about these (very obvious) scams is that the "seller" always has a ridiculous number of listings. If you think an item offered is a scam, just click on their other items and if they have lots of others - all photographed in different locations - there's your answer.
Quite frankly, if anybody falls for one of these scams, they probably shouldn't be allowed out on their own OR have access to their own money.

Having just looked at eBay, I count 3 Minors listed by 'maxwellboating', including 2 very nice vans. All start at £3000 bidding. No reserve with a Buy It Now price of £5250 each. None of the listings have any vehicle details. Each just say 'Contact Cara direct at (email address). She will tell you where the vehicle is located.

There are another four listings, including one 'spammed' from West Riding Classic Cars, that eBay have already blocked.

The seller currently has 640 live listings. Mainly motor vehicles of all kinds, as well as caravans, boats, jet skis etc. Of note is an immaculate early VW split-screen bus (with glazed panels in the roof). Yours for... you've guessed it... £5250. About £20,000 less than the going rate!

Since I posted about an hour ago, that user's active listings has shrunk from 640 to 11 but I suspect he/she is using a bulk listing tool so they'll probably all be back by midnight :(

...and they're back again. Identical to the last raft of listings except seller name which is now 'delrob101'

This scammer now has 4,274 listings, most for seriously tasty but fake cars - eBay should be going after such wholesale fraud

They were at it again last week including several Morrises.
I decided to string the fraudster along to see what I could find out and got the following reply from jjss8882@gmail.com. He attached several photos of the restoration of a green supposedly Engineers Van but woud not give the registration number or chassis number.

"Hi again, Unfortunately I do not reside in the UK. My father used to live in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. My mother is Italian and we both live in Italy and Stornoway, Scotland is to far away to arrange viewing for each offer we receive. I suggest going through eBay for your peace of mind. As payment method we will use Adyen which gives you 7 days inspection period on all items for high amount payments before Adyen.com pays the seller (similar to escrow service and more secure than PayPal). eBay is to replace PayPal with Adyen as its payment system a leading global payments processor, to become its primary payments processing partner.

See here: https://support.adyen.com/hc/en-us/arti ... eBay-users

Regarding delivery someone will transport it safely to your location.

This purchase protection guarantees that the vehicle is exactly as described; basically, once delivered, you'll have 7 days to inspect it and if you decide not to keep it you will get refunded in no time and they will charge me with the return costs. I will get paid only after you confirm that you have received the vehicle in good order.

Let me know if you want to go ahead as I still have quite a few more offers from potential buyers. If you want to go ahead please email me your full name and address along with your daily contact number to get this purchase registered with eBay and Adyen's secure Escrow service. Find several photos attached.

Kind Regards,
Jose Pecora "

All very plausible to make potential buyers feel secure.

Do we have any members on Stornoway we could nominate to the seller as being someone we can send to inspect this non -existent van ?

Forgot to say - Ebay didnt seem particularly concerned when I spoke to them this week. If I was to include my email address in any of my listings on ebay they would withdraw my listing immediately and give me a right bo*****ing. Is it an ebay insider trying to boost eby vehicle listings?

This is a recent chat via email after seeing a mk1 escort on a local sale site.

ME..
Hi, I am interested in the ford escort mk1 you have listed on a local website, It says you are located around the Walsall area, If you still have the car can you let me know when i can come and have a look, Thanks.

REPLY..
Good evening! My advert is still valid and the price is £3,650. The car is in very good working condition and also has all necessary documents available. The only problem is that I have moved to my old address in Bridport (DT6 4SE). If you want to buy through eBay and PayPal I can offer a free delivery and I take a commitment to deliver it at the same price and including testing period. Thank you

ME...
Is the car on Ebay? I drive down to Axminster and Lyme Regis all the time so i can view the car as you are only a few miles away in Bridport and i have my own car transporter to collect it.

REPLY...
Hi, Because I`m in Bridport (DT6 4SE) the entire transaction will be completed trough eBay and PayPal. They will handle everything for both of us, including transportation and the transfer of the car papers to your name. You don't have to pay anything extra, the total price that you must pay for this car is £3,600. Here is how the process works:
I will make a private eBay listing for you.
You will have to click "buy it now", fill in the forms and follow the instructions.
PayPal will send you an invoice with all the transaction details and the payment instructions.
You will have to secure the funds to PayPal. After the funds will be secured to PayPal,the delivery will begin and the car will arrive to you in max. 48 hours. When the car will be in your custody, you will have a 7 days inspection period. If everything is alright, the transaction ends and PayPal will release the money to me. If there is something wrong with the car, you will be fully refunded and I'll get my car back too, without any extra fees. Everything is covered by PayPal & eBay. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received it. I would need your eBay username so I can send you the link. I'm waiting for your reply.
Thank you

ME...
I do not have an Ebay account or paypal i have cash and will only buy the car when i see it, That is why i was looking on website you have it advertised on.

REPLY...
Hi, the car is already into Shiply (eBay official delivery company) custody, ready to be shipped, I am offering free delivery and I will agree for a 5-7 days of full inspection period ( after the date you receive the car ). This means that you have 7 days to inspect the car for any damages and decide if you want to keep it or not!Because I will sign eBay's return policy, your money will be insured by them and you will have the option to reject the deal, only if we go through PayPal as well. If this is the case, you will receive a full refund (money back) from PayPal and I will have to take the car back on my cost! IThank you

ME...
As already stated i do not have EBAY or PAYPAL if the car is not viewable prior to payment i am not interested in it, It almost seems like you have tried to advertise this car on a local website and then get me to pay money to an Ebay account and then see if i trust you to have the car delivered by some company that work for Ebay, I think the car you are selling is very cheap and i am prepared to pay £15,000 (WOW) I use Barclays (a big bank) and can pay you direct (please send me your bank details of your UK based bank) i have to make a small charge for this to cover admin fees (just $75), I need $ not £ as my nan was Lincoln's hat maker and we have to bank in $ since he was shot. Thanks you for your time please let me know very soon as i am looking at another car in the next few days.

I am still waiting for a reply :D

Interesting read, all this. I too 'follow' these email scammers and have reported them regularly to eBay (without ever getting a response).

What I don't get though is WHO IS FALLING FOR OBVIOUS CONS? We've all had emails from Nigerian princes, terminally ill millionaires and notifications of lottery wins for lotteries we didn't even enter and I can sort of understand why some vulnerable people would fall for them.

What sort of people, however, are seriously thinking that they can pick up a Ferrari, a luxury motorhome, a speedboat or a jet ski for a fraction of its real value...…..it's hardly likely to be an elderly spinster with the onset of dementia! You would assume that someone genuinely responding to such offers and is able to find his/her way round eBay has a modicum of intelligence. Someone must get 'caught' though, otherwise the scammers wouldn't bother would they?

…………...must go now as I've just had a message that I've got pay for my mint Ford Escort Mexico at 3250 GBP. What a bargain I've bagged there.

A lot link back to organised crime and E.European crime gangs. They're also diversifying into GumTree and other similar sites. This is why I'm most likely to buy via club or private ads.
