Old Nottingham Images

Post by geoberni »

So with the Shopping Centre company 'intu' calling in the Administrators, the Nottingham Post has done a piece of the building of the Broadmarsh Centre, which is currently in the midst of demolition/rebuilding, so probably going to be an eyesore for years in the current climate.
Spot the Moggies time!

I got them in photos... 4, 12, 13, & 16... :)
Although 13 & 16 are the same place at a slightly different angle...

Modern 'Brutalist' architecture, I preferred the look of 'old' Nottingham.
The common excuse of it being progress covers many unforgiveable sins............
Timber framed houses demolished, eh? More of our cultural history in the dustbin of modernisation then........

Sadly the only Morris with a readable registration is no longer on the DVLA database.
Best wishes,
Mike.

To be fair, Nottingham took more care of its heritage than most cities. It’s still a handsome place.
By contrast Derby destroyed most of its finest buildings back in the ‘60s to build a road.

"More of our cultural history in the dustbin of modernisation then....." Our cultural history is viewed as valueless now for reasons which I cannot understand, Mike. The uglification of Britain, both architecturally and culturally is a real tragedy.

I think there is an online petition to remove everything from where the Broadmarsh stood, and turn it into a green space.

Sounds nice to me.

Newcastle (my home town) sadly suffered a similar fate

Reminds me of a song by the local late great singer/songwriter ‘Alex Glasgow’ of which I have forgotten the title but went;

‘...a plate glass central precinct stands where shoppers stroll around and cry,
As they watch the blackened embers of an older, much richer city die.
And while they standardize, sterilize and cauterize the ancient cities ills,
The architects and planners all saved themselves a cottage in the hills.’

Had it on a LP but left it behind when we emigrated.
