hi i will tell you a few golden rules about fast minors

Post by trmog23 »

first thing, start with a motor thats fast in the firstplace,ie sbc/bbc/cossie,they are known reliable and simple, dont make the mistake of over complicating the engineering side of things,if theres an adequate simple way saving wheight that fine, why build a bridge then build onother under it to support the first one as some builders do.rover v8 is a good engine ,light, but does cost heavily to make power, chevy stuff is dirt cheap, cossies are quite expensive buy strong and if things are done right will take massive abuse, our little blue cosworth 4x4 mog has gone 11s and with bigger spec this year ie holset turbo, mountune build, black 1000cc injectors it will be 10s,with sub 3 sec 0-60,it will at shakespeare county raceway this season, cheers rob.

Those 1000cc injectors are going to be terrrible if used on the road or around the paddock, surely better off with 8 injector set up. Thats what I intend to do to mine, the current 630cc injectors are pretty marginal (plus run at 90% duty cycle flat out at the moment which is too high) if the ambient temperature is low and it has to idle quite a lot (like waiting in the queue at a sprint in late September). Have fouled the plugs up several times just as I reach the start line, the resolution of this size injector is just not fine enough at very low duty cycles for this size of engine (2 litre).

going round corners?

Post by trmog23 »

its 4x4 it goes round corners just fine, although we mainly favour drag racing as its a test of the cars pure power, but my misses drove it round a circuit for the first time three laps and came .6 sec behind the quickest skyline so suppose it does corners .
Image
Rob,

My engine is a Fiat 2 litre.
It has the 131 block (no balancer shafts), Thema/Integrale 16 valve head which I ported (have flow bench data somewhere), Colombo Bariani medium race cams, 7.2:1 forged pistons (to allow 2 bar boost reliably), Arrow conrods, block modified for piston cooling jets, lightened crank, steel flywheel, 4wd paddle clutch, 45mm jenvey throttle bodies (which I believe are restricting it slightly having flow tested other throttle bodies on another head for a mate of mine and comparing the flow data for my head), dry sumped oil system. The turbo is only a T34 roller bearing unit which is currently restricting the engine to 1.3 bar max boost although it does hold that boost all the way to 8000 rpm. Intercooler is from a Mitsubishi Evo 6 which seems to do a very good job of keeping the air temp reasonable. The downpipe in the photo restricted the engine badly and has since been changed.

Despite a 90mm stroke, these engines properly built with the right bits will handle 9500 rpm safely, so my 8000 rpm current limit is very safe!
Image
That cossie was at the National a few years ago with a certain spares specialist sponsor logo on it if I remember how long have you owned it.

James,

I moved the engine back by just over a foot about 12 years ago, made a huge difference to the handling and traction. The suspension uprights are Mk4 Cortina with a Mk1 Escort quick rack. I designed and made the wishbones etc, it enabled me to correct all the short comings of the standard Minor set up.

What has happened to your Mog then??

Martin
