Project V8

Post by meerkat »

I have a 1962 2door which although it has 4 months mot is well past it's sell by date in fact it shouldn't have had one issued to it last year, however I have a 3.9 inj which will find it's way in there in the not to distant future and I will try to keep those that are interested up to date.

The engine is from a discovery which should be good for 220bhp in top condition, however I want to change this and give it a lot more torque, we shall see I'm not sure at this point how I want the engine.
It will have 2 main chassis rails made from 40x80 steel box, these will run roughtly in place of the existing front chassis legs but will run to the rear of the body tub then slope up roughly following the floor to a position to mount the jag diff. Out riggers will then join the rails to the sills and rear box section. There that sounds easy..... and then after lunch I will fit the suspension.......

The suspension arrives tomorrow, and once I have the wheels I can then work out the amount I will have to shorten it, the list of jobs is growing by the minute, I want to see if I can use power steering so I shall look at all modern hatchtbacks to find a suitable one, if not then I know a ford escort one will fit. pedal box which incorporates a servo to mount to the bulkhead, a new fuel tank will be made at least 10 gallons which will be mounted over the rear axle. there will be no body mods and the 17" rims will sit inside the arches. I want the car to be as subtle as poss. The wiring loom will most likely come from a kit car company who can supply the connections for the ecu, I would like to put aircon in but I'm struggling to find room for a heater let alone anything else. I would like the exhaust to exit at the rear but that depend on ground clearance, will keep you posted, any suggestions feel free to post.

Have a look at the many V8 Minor threads out there for some ideas.
I wouldn't bother with power steering personally. There are plenty aftermarket heaters to choose from (car builder solutions one is neat) - I use a mini van one in my 3.9 Minor, but for my LS powered one I'm looking at an aftermarket one.
Make sure you mount the engine low and well back, and choose an appropriate ratio for the jag rear. A 3.9 won't be super fast - 220hp is a bit optomistic for even a standard engine with cam - you'll need decent heads too.
What front suspension are you using?

I will take note of engine mounting, but it will have to be a compromise as I want to retain a 2+2, I will be using xjs suspension with 4 pot calipersand vented discs, the rims will be the same size all round, I want it to go round corners and maybe trackdays, perhaps I want to much!!

My 3.9 minor is a 4 seater(marginal since I fitted Audi TT seats), and engine is low and well back. It has chevette suspension at front with a jag irs.
You will have some narrowing to do to keep track within the body, but it can be done. My mate had a really tidy green minor built to the spec you're after.

Yes, that was it when he first got it. He then resprayed it in Almond green, fitted a nice interior and replaced the alloys with steels (painted cream).
I've posted pics of it here before.

I seem to have gone full circle in life, many years ago I used to belong to a car club based at cuxton marina, where I met the owner of the green mog, the blue traveller parked next to it in the carpark was mine. then MY FAVOURITE CAR IS A DATSUN CHERRY happened in my life and I moved to the tonbridge area.

Jag IFS ill be tricky as the wishbones are really long meaning that your crossmember once narrowed will restrict room between the rails.
I'm grafting a traveller body onto a TVR chassis and adding twin turbo's to a 3.9 with TVR heads to give it a bit of poke.
That should be a handful.
Keep us posted on the build

Update so far.
The body is almost ready to be put onto the modified chassis, I just have to replace the nearside sill with the new box section the jag diff is a 3.54 powerlock, I'm having real problems trying to get hold of some period slot mags it seems there are none to be found,so I will have to rethink what wheels to get.
The trouble is I need the wheels before I can get the drive shafts shortened, I don't want to extend the arches, so if anyone out there knows of a set of slot mags that will fit a jaguar xjs hub please let me know. when it stops raining I'll post some photos.

There are some on eBay at the moment
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewit ... 0003111122
they do come up on there for jags now and again.
I believe the jag pcs is the same as chevy isn't it? I'm sure someone will confirm, this of course opens up abother selection of super oldschool wheels to choose from.
cheers, Daniel

I have looked at the chevy wheels and your right they do have the same pcd but the stud size is a lot wider on the jag,so unless I can physically try them on I dont want to order them only to find I can't get the wheel nuts to fit.

I have bought some wheels, a slight change of plan (of which I'm sure there will be many) 15x7 minilights with 215 tyres I almost went for steels from USA but these came up on ebay and were to too much of a bargain to pass up. The chassis is almost ready to be fixed to the body and the drive shafts have just gone to a local engieering shop to be narrowed. I have the front suspension clip from an XJS ready to be modified, but debating wether to keep the geomtry the same and keep the wish bones angled to the center line of the car and just narrow the front clip by 305mm or set up the wishbones so they are running parrallel with the center line, as mentioned before the lower wishbone is very long so it could pose a clearence problem for the steeing rack, we shall see.

you could set up a photo bucket or image shack account and upload pictures to there and put links on here.

or try resizing them on your pc to 640x480 before you upload.

can't wait to see some pics, the wheels sound nice 8)
