I just hope no-one was charged any money for those welds!

:o :o oh wow! They make ours look tidy!!!!

Great responses here, very helpful to get advice and hear experiences!

A quick update ;
What does this car and a tree have in common? You can estimate the age by counting the layers.. We are uncovering welded patches covered by patches, covered by patches!!!
The car is losing metal at a rate of knots but I'm assured they will be replaced.
As my other halfs apprentice, I got the wonderful job of scraping the waxoil off from around the cross member..

Other jobs complete :
Flushed the coolant pipes and radiator ;
New thermostat ;
Oil filter conversion ;
Cleaning the vinyl (ongoing)
Replacing the parcel shelf (abandoned due to holes not aligning and a lack of patience at the moment).

All the glass is now covered up! (thanks) and all the vinyl removed.

I've always thought it was a brilliant move by Issigonis to plan for the cars to get lighter as the engines got older and weaker...... :D

OOOPs and apologies again. I bet you wish i had never said anything but there is a lot of good metal there. When I did it i was determined to replace the cross member including the jacking points as the car looks odd somehow without them, even if I will never use them for jacking.

It was worth it though to expose the rot on the C post. All rectifiable, but be careful what you cut out without bracing, as distortion can occur if panels are removed.

Are you sure you have the right parcel shelf for the year?

Haha that's ok! It was a good shout and it's worth sorting out. The Other Half is doing a really thorough job so the fixes should give the car another 50 years! We live in Aberdeen so bodywork is always a bit vulnerable to rust, making sure it's robust before I do the insulation and new carpets will just save having to rip up insulation and carpets in a couple of years time.

I've just checked and the parcel shelf is definitely for the right year - 1964-71. Fixing it to the existing crash pad is where I'm having problems. The steel bar seems to be slightly curved but the parcel shelf is poker straight. The parcel shelf was also about 1/2" wider than the crash bar and the old parcel shelf.

The crash pad steel bar often bent through people leaning and in some cases standing on it, The old one will have warped with wear and water ingress although the shelf should go side to side. Trim the new one to fit the old one.

Keep the piccies coming. Good luck.

Welcome, it looks like you're well and truly inducted into the art of Minor Ownership. I love the opening post: "It's in good condition and completely original", followed by the prolonged restoration thread :wink:

One important point: You mentioned that the glove box liner had been damaged by water ingress - make sure that you have identified and fixed the leak, otherwise you will accumulate more water and undo all your excellent work quicker than you would like. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished car.

Thanks!!!
Well, it's been rubbish weather, but all the new steel has arrived, been cut to size, bent to suit, drilled for welds and is ready to go.
In the mean time, I'm fitting new window seals and putting insulation in the door cavity.
The seals were too shallow and kept falling in too far, so got 4mm thick foam take and put that in first. Now to wrestle with getting it all back together again.
As you can see, I have a little helper...

Thanks! She's a saluki x whippet, part of a brother and sister duo.
Hoping that sorting out the steel, insulation, etc will pay dividends later on.

Before you start the struggle removing the nut from the back door quarter light window....
There's an access hatch.
Of course there is.
At least we got to put together some interesting socket combinations first.
Both threads have completely snapped BTW.

Things are moving along slowly but surely! The destruction phase is over and reconstruction has started.
Floor panels and new drivers side sills being welded up.
