Green 1958 4door

Hi all new member and owner of a rusty morris minor 1000, i have dabbled alittle in restoration before as had a vw camper but have sold that and was looking for something else and spotted this on ebay and now mine and might have taken on to much, but it's all good i like a challenge. let me know what you guys think and any advice will be very welcome.

Welcome.

Looks an interesting project. Lots of work in all the usual places. Many of us have seen (and owned ) much worse.

There are many threads on here which will help and guide with useful pictures and problems solved (If photo bucket has not deleted them all)

Sage Green Pete's 1957 4 door will be a good guide.

What is the original Green colour ? Ray Newell's 'Bible' says it is probably 'Dark Green' but as has been said before, it is your car, paint it what colour you like. ( a previous owner obviously has !)

What are you planning? Return to originality or as close as one can get ? Or something special. What id the floor like / Interior trim ? Original 948 engine or a later replacement ?

In any case lots of people here willing to help and advise, giving of their experience .

As mentioned my car might give you some inspiration being a similar age four door, I'll try and replace plenty of pictures that photobucket ruined when I get time, they might help you even though my welding isn't great, lol.

hi guys have been looking at the other threads already to give some ideas where to go with mine, colour is still green but has had a respray at some point a simular green but take a picture and looks blue got a shock when pick it up. will say the floor al gone but it been layered so will have to be unwrapped to see the full horror await me but will keep me busy and out of trouble for a good while.

really need to get of the ground and get a better look, but not sure what bits are gonna be safe to jack up, think i;ll have to make roll over jig as seen some homemade one from a scafold pole and two a frame that could work for me once i cleared the garage and striped it

Hi and welcome,

The original colour looks very like 'BMC Dark Green', paint code GN12, and is well-known to go 'blue' after a while. Our 1958 was just 6 years old when my mother bought it, and was showing blue tinges very clearly then, so an early job was to respray it, which lasted until the 6-year long restoration started in 1992. GN12 still available in 2-pack, but don't know about cellulose, if this is even allowed these days?

What are your plans? When you get into it, it will very likely be worse than first impressions, but all the panels that you are likely to need are readily available. Are you intending to do the work yourself, including the welding? Hopefully you will be doing it under cover??

Where are you based? There could well be another MMOC member locally who has already been through much of what you are about to experience!

Hi IslipMinor, i did buy it thinking i have to replace all the floor anyway and may take along time to do, all work will be done by my own hands as cant afford to pay someone, thou i have not done any thing this bad before, i worked in the paint and panels supply for a number of years so hoping i know more than i think,

at the moment it will be just basic cut and replace and keep standard as for paint not sure as i did think i bought a blue one and the wife says want blue because the camper was that blue and a scooter i had but i'm like its green so keep it green but thats a long way off

I'm in the east midlands bang on the border to nottingham, leicester and derby

It is a long-term project, but even after taking 6 years do it, it was definitely very worthwhile. I did everything except the painting, and experienced satisfaction, frustration and everything in between many times in the 6 years!

What colour interior does it have? The original for 'Dark Green' was grey, with a grey coach stripe to match. Also originally the wheels and the grill were grey, but a pale cream looks much better in my view.

If you are in the Oxford area, and would like to see GN12 'Dark Green' in the flesh, please let me know.

thanks IslipMinor yes has grey door cards and seats can just see bit in this pic but need to get out side to get some better pics as bit cramped in the garage at the min to get any good one

been looking at some roll over jigs, and think I will have to make one along the same line as this one

I used a couple of builder's trestles and a scaffold pole for mine - finished up staying on there for nearly two years, no problems. The picture of my messy painting set up is the only one I have to show that I mounted the trestles on castors, very useful for moving side to side in my single garage. Quite easy to rotate, but I used my chain hoist attached to convenient roof beams to control it and hold it in place.

thanks Mark, great bits of info there and will probs use one or two of them, scaffold tube on it way and just starting to make a little room to move bits around so i can start the full strip down, didn't think I had so much stuff that would be really useful if I had a use for it. `think it time to let some of it go.

Been a while but got round to removing the headlining, door cards, front and rear glass, boot, bonnet and engine.

at least it's a start hopefully not as long inbetween now and the next time i get round to some thing, which will be removing the gearbox
