Morris Minor 1000 (factory convertible) restoration

Post by Blumpygrumf »

Hi all,

Started work on this 1960 factory convertible about two weeks ago, we're just at the point of lifting the engine/gearbox out prior to working on the chassis and bodywork. It was a barn find, cost us nothing so it's worth making the effort. The engine runs and sounds very sweet indeed, much to our surprise. There's very little damage anywhere other than a few areas of rust, and nothing missing that we can see.

Will keep you informed of progress!

Andy
Welcome to the Forum. If you acquired the convertible for free ( " cost us nothing " ) you're a very lucky man.
Time to buy the Lottery ticket I'd suggest !
The car certainly better than the average and it should make a nice little car when you've finished.
Thanks for sharing the piccies and video. Hope the resto goes well.

It's not mine unfortunately, I'm just doing the strip down/rebuild work on it. It was however 100% totally free, so that moves the goalposts considerably when it comes to how much will be spent on it's renovation.

Interesting project. Someone appears to have fitted a 1962-on 1098cc inlet manifold, carb and air filter to it, unless that is, the whole engine has been swapped to 1098cc?

Hmm, interesting point there Chipper. To be honest I've not looked at the engine at all yet other than to get it running. Hopefully I'll be lifting it out the car tomorrow which will give me the opportunity to have a right good inspection of all things engine!

Engine out today, and what a doddle it was, no problems encountered in any way.

The engine bay looks in fairly good condition though we're yet to have a proper clean up of things, but on initial inspection it all looks very promising.

It looks as though the interior of the chassis legs need a good scrape out of loose rust flakes … to see "what you got ". The nearside one is looking a bit filly on the top inboard edge. Not clear from the photos as to whether the
leg has had some attention in the past The shot inside the engine bay , looking down under the dash board area, is that the start of a patch I can see ?
But as you say all in all fairly good condition.

Hi Bob.

That front bulkhead area, inside the engine bay, as far as I remember there are no patches anywhere on it, but I am going from memory now. The photos aren't too clear on this so I'll have a good inspection next time I'm with the car and will let you know.
