Lucy my morris minor

Post by lucythemoggy »

Welcome to Lucy my 1970 morris minor!
I bought her in 2018 from a lady in eastbourne and drove her all the way back to plymouth with no issues at all!
She comes with her original bill of sale, and dealer keyfob, and a mountain of paperwork. I am the 5th owner and have details of every owner since new with no gaps. Her seats are original and have never been recovered, and she is on her original engine with only 90,000 from new.

Hi,
Nice Moggy, it didn't look like it needed restoring?
Nice early Mini in the background too.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Here is a pic of her interior, which has NEVER been replaced! the main reason that sold me the car! I drove her from eastbourne where i bought her to plymouth where I live. She lived in croydon for the first 32 years of her life, then spent the rest of her life in East Sussex, till I bought her. She was garaged by the previous owners, which would explain the great condition of her interior. The lady I bought it from never took lucy out in the rain, but when I drove her back to plymouth, it rained all the way home! The wipers were shot so driving home was fun! The first thing I bought for lucy was new wiper blades!
She came with a full tank of petrol, and only used £25 to get me to plymouth, a distance of 250 miles. She didn't use any oil or water, and didn't break down once.
I have spent quite a bit of money so far in sorting out her mechanicals, complete renewal of the braking system, alternator upgrade, electric fuel pump, 3 new tyres, new distributor, duplex timing chain, plus servicing.
I took her to her first MMOC national in 2019, which was a 500 mile round trip for lucy from plymouth to northampton and back. I stuck to a steady 50/55mph, and she did the trip with no issues, and only took £49 in fuel there and back!
At the moment she is in my local classic car restorers awaiting restoration. He has been dealing with morris minors for 35 years. She needs both sills replacing where they have been patched to death for the MOT, new jacking points, new front chassis legs, which were patched 20 years ago, but need replacing, and new engine ties plates. This is the stuff we know needs doing, she might yet turn up more surprises! then it's a full suspension rebuild, new carpets, a few modern upgrades, new front wings, bootlid, door bottoms, chrome and respray. It will probably cost me more than she is worth, but I will never get rid of her. She is part of the family now!

She doesn't need too much doing, she had patches on her underside in her life to get her through the mot, but I wanted to do her properly so she will last another 50 yrs! I took a leaf out of Charles Ware's durable car ownership book, by getting it done properly. The condition of the interior sold it for me, original door cards, seats and carpet, but the carpet though original, was torn and had gone damp, so will need a new one. I replaced all the door seals from the furflex to updated rubber ones which give a better seal. Once I replace the front and rear window rubbers, she will be watertight!

Hopefully a couple of pics . of my Moggie attached . She ( always she ) was bought new by my uncle in 1970 . When he passed away we found her in his garage as an MOT failure . Fair bit of work been done - and still needs attention in various areas .
Similar to you I have loads of original docs etc. When she had work done the number plates were changed ( as you can see ) for ‘ modern ‘ ones !!!!!
She really is ‘ one of the family ‘.

Another lovely moggy but I'll be sticking to old fashioned black and white (raised digits) plates myself.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Interesting - I have a traveller that I've owned for 36 years which is CPB 276H supplied by Stewart & Ardern in Staines and yours is the closest registration I've seen in all those years - do you know who the supplying dealer was of yours? The number plates on mine were reflective from new.

So as not to hijack the post, I do also have a Peat Brown convertible, built in 1968, the last full year of production.

Tried to upload photos but without success.

Hi , yes ( see attached photo- hopefully ). My uncle bought the car new and I still have many ( or indeed all ) of the original documents . He lived in Staines and was employed by BOAC at Heathrow . In his younger days he rode AJS motorcycles . I still have a receipt for one- just wish I had the bike 😂

Interesting! The traveller was owned originally by a wholesalers in Ashford and used for transporting goods, particularly TVs apparently.

Hopefully my photos are OK and include the Peat convertible which appears to be Rose Taupe as it had been given a back street blowover by someone who had issues matching the paint.

Super cars , as indeed all Moggies are !
Rose Taupe and Peat seem to be very close to each other and often confused .
