This is the one!
The garage is local to me as well. I do not know if The Minor is still around.

Has anyone any experience of this, and whether it's a good position for it, or is it worth getting the tail housing modified to bring it say a couple of inches further forward?
Frontline developments offer a Type 9 gearbox with a shortened remote to overcome this problem. I don't know if it is available separately but you could ring and find out.

Love my type 9's. Both of my minors have them and had no problems. Makes the cars completely usable on a daily basis.

Oh, and the stick location is absolutely standard.

Standard for a Minor, or standard for a Ford Type 9?

Many thanks for pointing out the Rocket box and the 2000E box are the same - but are they?
I have attached a link to Burton Power which has at the foot of the page a reference/description of the original rocket box
http://www.burtonpower.com/quaife-4-spe ... ua4rc.html
I have the 2000E box as fitted to the following Ford Vehicles:
Lotus Cortina Mk2
Corsair 2000E
Escort twin cam
RS1600
Mexico Mk1
Cortina Mk2 1600GT 1600E
Capri 1600 GT XLR & GT
Capri 2000 GT XLR etc
Cortina Mk3 1600GT
1600GXL
Ratios:
1st...................2.972
2nd..................2.010
3rd...................1.397
4th....................1.000
General description:
Light casing with separate bell housing 4 speed all synchro. Single rail shift on models since 1969 except the Escort group which retained three rail version. Known commonly as the 2000E Ford Gearbox.
The single rail version gear change is better than the three rail version.

Interesting. I guess you may have a modified (shortened) Ford tail housing fitted to achieve this, as the standard Ford Type 9 gear lever position is more or less level with the front of the seats.

That seems to ring a bell. Ware's did them some years ago, I have the paperwork somewhere.
I guess they were doing lots and had a conveyor belt of modified parts. Anyway, they've been excellent and...touch wood...trouble free. Not cheap though, but really improves the cars as daily drivers.
I still need the 'fix' of an original classic for those hair shirt moments, so I keep the 1955 A30 pretty much as she was!

Re: Best kit for Ford 5-speed conversion
Hi
A question for PhilTheHill
Any idea now where to buy a C.S. Autoclassics bell-housing to mount an A Series engine to a Ford 200E gearbox please? What clutch arm etc did you use. Is this for a hydraulic slave cylinder?
Thanks
Mike

Re: Best kit for Ford 5-speed conversion
The C S Auto classics gearbox housing as far as I am aware is no longer made or available.
You may be able to utilise the currently available Ford gearbox adapter bellhousing because the front part of the Type 9 gearbox is the same as the 2000E box
As regards the clutch release arm I used a 1275cc Midget arm with a modified Marina roller release bearing. I fitted a hydraulic clutch system utilising a separate master cylinder, remote reservoir and MG Midget hydraulic operating cylinder.
As this was possibly the first 1275cc to Ford gearbox conversion everything was a one off. Today we are lucky in that most parts are available off the shelf.
Here is the CS Auto classics bell housing mated to the Ford 2000E gearbox which has been converted with a full Quaife clubman set up with alloy casing and quick shift.
