OH WELL THAT WAS SHORT LIVED:
I think my Moggie hates me
Cooked my diff on the way home from Nottingham last night, started whining 20m from home - nursed it back but got so hot you could smell it from 6 feet off, too hot to touch!!!
Not sure what level bung it should have but mine has a plain hole with a rubber grommet? which was obviously perished?
Drained what was left in it (about 200ml max!) and filled it up - not surprisingly she whines quite well over fifty
LIVING THE DREAM
I suppose I better start looking for 4.22 diffs / axles on Fleaby and reading up on rebuild: JOY

Just because my brain is kaput, it will nag me to distraction not fully rebuilding the whole thing, then waiting for a bearing to fail etc and then having to do the whole in out thing all over again (doing bits more than once is my biggest pet hate in the world ever!!!!!).bigginger wrote:If you find another diff, why do you need to read up on rebuilding one?

Oh yeah absolutely, new bearings etc - while its out is the best time to do it.bigginger wrote:Aha - so you'd rebuild any diff that you got?

Not that I won't re-use or re-con parts, I couldn't bring myself to get a second hand diff (or any other part) and just drop it in - it would nag at me not knowing the actual condition of it.

The filler/level is a screw-in steel plug, either in the diff nose for earlier cars (up to around the 1098 engine), or in the back of the axle housing on later cars. Not sure what level bung it should have but mine has a plain hole with a rubber grommet? which was obviously perished?
Do you have a picture of yours?

This is the rubber grommet that is the current "bung"IslipMinor wrote:The filler/level is a screw-in steel plug, either in the diff nose for earlier cars (up to around the 1098 engine), or in the back of the axle housing on later cars. Not sure what level bung it should have but mine has a plain hole with a rubber grommet? which was obviously perished?

Thats good to know, no harm in checking thoughbmcecosse wrote:I wouldn't bother 'rebuilding' a diff - plenty of good 4.22 out there! Just not economic - and frankly the bearings 'never' wear out - unless some numpty runs the diff with no oil!
Can you say what needle wasfitted to the carb in the dyno check ? Or did they reprofile the original needle ?
The invoice states carb needle BBW?

If you take the bung out, is there a threaded ring welded into the hole? I wonder if someone has just drilled a level hole in an early axle casing when they fitted a later diff.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Here's a less than brilliant shot of a late axle casing:
