Just been working in the garage and had read this thread this morning.
Never really looked before but i have a convertible(awaiting restoration whilst I finish my traveller)seems it has the mod engine steady but someone has obviously tried welding in a bracket which would appear to be well off line to engine block?? (see pic)
Update from the topic starter-I found that slackening the steady bar had a marginal effect on the shudder, but it still occurs at low revs when the clutch pedal is depressed. Wasn't this the reason the bar was introduced in the first place? Also, did you think it could be due to the grommets being worn? All of this wasn't a problem until I had the darn thing welded back into place!
The bar should not have any tension on it, ie it is not designed to pull the engine at all. I should just be "at rest". The intention is to stop excessive movement when power is transmitted through the driveline.

I tried slackening the nuts on the end of the steady bar, which has improved the vibration, but not resolved it. I'm beginning to wish I'd the the darn thing unwelded! Here's a photo of the bar. Does anyone see a problem with the positioning?
