Hi, Can anyone tell me where I might lay my hands on a clutch alignment tool for a Minor and how much it will cost me??

I usually make one up with a suitable socket on an extension bar.

If you want to buy one ebay have 63 on at the moment from about £5

If you can get hold of a scrap (as in beyond reconditioning) gearbox, then the best tool is the input shaft as that is what engages with the driven plate.

If you've got the clutch off, then it's worth fitting a new bronze bush in the end of the crankshaft (remove the old one first!) as the input shaft also fits into the bush, which does wear.

If you can't find an old shaft, then any good motor accessory shop should be able to provide a "universal" alignment tool that has interchangeable plugs and collars so that you can get the correct combination for a Minor. Frost do one for £13.50

Just use the valve grinding tool (or any piece of dowel rod - or even a wooden spoon handle!) - which fits nicely in the crank bush - and wind a bit of insulating tape round it to make up the size where the plate sits. It's not critical anyway! Certainly no need to waste good money on it! I'm sure someone will soon point out - that this section is really for 'board' problems - not 'Minor' problems - and they will move it to where it belongs! <br>Image<br>

i got one machined in exchange for a tube of autosol
but you can homemake one by rapping loads and loads of masking tape round a bar or something.
or you can align it by eye but be prepared to grunt if it wont go

So do I, just close one eye and look through the clutch with the other. An old input shaft is nice to have but not essential, the clutch can be centred by eye.

Indeed it can easily be centred by eye - but the tool helps to hold it firmly in place while the bolts are tightened around the pressure pad assembly. I can say from (many years ago) experience - it's a nightmare trying to refit a box from below when the plate is NOT QUITE dead centre!
