Lifting out the engine...

Hi all,

I'm looking to pick a few brains here, on how other people have removed their engines - I mean the actual lifting of it.

I was going to dril a hole through the top of wooden joist and use a block and tackle to lift it out - although I'm not sure if the joist would be strong enough - maybe I should check the manual for the weight of the actual engine - anyway...

How have other people removed the engine?

I could always hire a mini jib, although it's always nice to keep costs to a minimum.

When I removed and replaced Puddles' engine I used a trolly jack and lifted it up clear of the engine mounts. Then heaved it over the front cross member... I had taken the front of the car off first...

The way I have done it in the past is to remove the front panel, grille ect adn to get a few mates and just slide it out. We put rope around the block and just pulled it out. There were 3 of us and it was fairly easy.

Me too... Though I sort of regretted it when trying to get out of bed the next day.

Which didn't stop me doing the same, but in reverse, to get the replacement engine back in.

I removed the head and alternator to make it a little less weighty, and more compact for lugging it out the engine bay first, which probably helped.

I made a tripod out of 3 scaffold poles, hung a block and tackle from it and used a rope through a pair of lifting eyes. You need to know your Boy Scout knots and lashings or you could be in deep doo-doos

I lift mine with one of those cheap block and tackle things (looks like its wound with 'blind' cord but obviously isnt), bought it probably 40 years ago, attached with a rope round a joist in the middle of the garage roof. Works great. Once the engine is up push the car out of the way. I didnt remove the front panel

It all comes to bits and packs away in 5 minutes. The hoist cost £3 from Canadian Tire. But I have also just lifted the engine out sans head/alternator after jacking it with a trolley - and then sliding it on a bit of board over the front crossmember.

My front crossmember was so rotted out I just supported the engine and gearbox on timbers and wheeled the car back!

Maybe you could fit the overhauled engine and gearbox in the same manner reversed, then after they are fitted weld in a new front crossmember!

I liked BMC's idea of a board on the cross member to slide the engine over.

You could buy an engine hoist off ebay

Theyre about £120 new and go for simelar amount good second hand.

Why not buy one , use it then sell on ebay again - it will work out much cheaper than hiring at about £60 a time
