Gasket Sealing
I'm putting a new timing chain on my car and am wondering whether the gasket on the cover needs sealing or putting on dry? If so do you put it on one side of the gasket or both?

Both.
Re: Gasket Sealing
None! New engines had none - why would you need it now ? Just make sure the faces are perfectly clean - no goo required.

Right on!
Also make sure the surfaces are FLAT, especially on items like the timing gear cover, often made out of sheet metal. Sometimes they need to be beat into submission, er, I mean back into shape.

Thanks all, should I soak the new chain in engine oil before fitting?
Re: Gasket Sealing
Just dribble some on before fitting the cover - fitted with a new seal of course, which should be wiped generously with grease. Then fit the cover - all screws 'finger tight' - then fit the pulley and turn the engine over a couple of times to centre the seal (and cover) onto the hub of the pulley - slowly tightening the screws little by little in order as you do so.
