fitting disk breaks nd different axle?

Post by jmaster78 »

hi all, am thinking of fitting disk breaks to the front of my morris minor, but rather than pay big money for a kit, i was wondering if there are any other cars that i could use the front hubs and back axle from. preferrably something that has a decent choice of alloy wheels, and as little work as possible, its a tall order i know but thought i'd ask! cheers

Marina is the answer. Search on here and you will find all the info you need. They fit mgf alloys.

As regards the marina rear axle. If it hasn't been converted already You'd need to change the axle 'perches'. These are the brackets that are welded to the axle and sit on the road springs. Basically, cut off the old 'marina' perches and weld new 'Minor' ones on (at the correct angle and distance on the axle).

And turn the brake back plates so that the handbrake lever lines up with the 'minor' handrbake cable. And drill a new hole behind the oil seal cup ( on the brake backplate, so as to stop axle oil ingress onto the brake shoes, if oil seal fails). beware, you cannot buy replacement brake drums for these axles. Not new anyway, as far as I know.

Ford escort axle maybe? Buy marina front discs (change to ford PCD wheel stud pattern).

Or marina discs with Minor pcd stud pattern conversion. And buy some '4 inch' pcd wheels Mini, midget. if they are 13 x 5 inch wide there are a few options of tyres sizes these days. You may have these already.

Problem is the 13 inch wheel struggles a bit to fill the wheel arch unless you buy 'fat tyres'. I have 185x65x13 on 5.5j width wheels. These do fill the arches and I have no traction issues BUT I have uprated the suspension.

other than the kits there are no disk brakes that will bolt straight on without some sort of fabrication . marina hubs will need special bearings & spacers to fit. I have marina on mine but did it years ago when they were readily available in scrapyards etc but some parts are getting scarce now. If I were to do it today I would use one of the JLH ford kits
