Minor hard to start when warm
Hi all,
I have a 1966 Morris Minor 1000 for past few years which never gave any trouble. Lately, I am finding it hard to start. I put a new fuel pump into it and this seems to have sorted the problem when it's cold. However, if I drive it for a while and turn it off, it's very hard to start when the engine is warm.
Any advice would be much appreciated

Have you fitted exactly the correct model of petrol pump? Modern non-SU substitutes often produce a higher pressure, and this will highlight any imperfection in the carburettor needle valve, leading to flooding. Even the incorrect SU pump (a High Pressure one) may do this.
I also have a pet theory that modern petrol is less dense than it used to be, so the fuel may sit higher in the float bowl (and thus the jet) than it was designed to. Note that setting the level with drills or other gauges doesn't address this.
Other than that, how does it run? Have you checked or changed anything else?

Check that the ignition points gap.

Sounds like the condensor is faulty.

Does the choke return fully? If the jet stayed in a lower position, then that would make the mixture rich. As above, does the car run well at other times. Also, check the colour of the spark plugs immediate;y after a good run (switch off before it idles for any period of time).

Hot start problem is almost always down to flooding - too high float level/too powerful pump......!

I'd also be thinking condenser, always used to be considered one of the causes of hot start difficulties.

"when you run about 15-20 km, miss and stop car and you have to wait to cool, then you can start - IF you put a wet handkerchief on the ignition coil to cool it ,you can start the car vary soon " is that the problem of you ? Change the distribute condenser ( if the condenser bad, check contact point it must be damage of middle ) - check ignition coil - look engine oil also - good luck

Hi Im doing an oil and filter change soon.
The oil is not that dirty.
Would it be a good idea to take the sump off and give it a clean.

Is this a new subject? Certainly not related to a hot start issue. Given that removing a sump gives scope for badly fitting gaskets, and thus increases the risk of a leak, I would never remove the sump unless there is an overwhelmingly good reason. If the oil is not dirty, and is not old, then why change it? Stick to the recommended 6,000 miles.tomas.geoghegan wrote:Hi Im doing an oil and filter change soon.

I know its never the coil but worth trying a known good one just in case it is

Ignition, condensor, choke and coil? I might as well add the timing could be at fault, suspect too far retarded if having difficulty hot-starting.
