Engine size
Can't seem to upload pics. I've been given an engine,Gold seal replacment. Can't make out the size 1098 - 950 etc. Came with a relpacment ( Gold ) ribbed gear box. Looks like the tab on the side with the engine size has been removed. Engine number 8G163 R M4474, with AD added below. Any ideas ? [frame][/frame]

Re: Engine size
We do really need piccys - they're probably too big. Open them in paint and resize them there to about 300 pixels less, and save them again in your Pictures file. Then upload again.

Hope this helps[frame][/frame]

Re: Engine size
I'd hazard a guess at 948...
Note the oil filler cap is the wrong one.
Be careful with that metal vac pipe!

Re: Engine size
It is probably a 1098 engine. Look under the rocker cover - if it is a 12G202 head then that confirms 1098...
Re: Engine size
On the exhaust side of the engine - you may see 950 or 1100 cast into the block - that would give you a clue and the oil filler cap would appear to be a radiator cap!! The head has a temp sender unit tapping just under the thermostat housing so would suggest a 1098. Vac pipe is going the wrong way though - would normally go towards the thermostat and on to the carb.???
Re: Engine size
1100 was never cast in the block. It's just possible (but unlikely) that it is a 848 engine - hence the need to check the head casting number. And whatever you do - preserve that rocker cover with the BMC sticker showing!!!!

Re: Engine size
What backplate and clutch are fitted?
950 would be cast in the block,1098 would have 1100 tag

Re: Engine size
It 'looks' like the thick 1098 backplate - but the 848 probably used that backplate too...

Re: Engine size
Looks to have a solid casting for the mechanical fuel pump also - which to me signifies an 1100 block..
Yes, or possibly an 850

Re: Engine size
This type of oil filler cap was widely used on Triumphs, Hillmans and Vauxhalls of the period. What it is doing on a Minor engine is anybody's guess.
Re: Engine size
Thanks everyone, just pushed it into the garage until my next day off, more investigations then.
Nothing on the block, just a missing tab. Heater tap, (or hole for it) on the rear of the block, has a blanking plate.
If it were an 803 ? would it not have a screw on oil filter ? I think the rad cap, on top of the rocker box, was an attempt to keep dirt out etc. The engine was given to me from a neighbour, he was winding his late Fathers estate up. Think I mentioned, a ribbed, gold, gear box came with the engine. Would a 1098 box work with a 950 engine ? ?
Anyway, get your Ski's on, looks like we are in for a bit of snow over the weekend.

Re: Engine size
A ribbed box will 'fit', needs an 1100 style clutch and backplate at least to fit. I would say assume it is an 1100, the chances of BMC putting a 950 with an 1100 gearbox is remote.

Thanks Chesney.
