I was just worried that I would have to have a really accurately cut spacer if it had to support a bearing the metal is in the post as we speak and Im planning to have my engine out of the car early april so I can whip the 803 tail shaft off and get to work. will keep you all updated and if all goes to plan, I'll have a go at making a clear guide for others who might be thinking of doing the conversion in the future

Right performed the gearbox mod and now have my 948 out of the car. I have found that the gear change is too tight and there isn't much throw on it. Took the tail off and looked at the selector rods and they are extremely difficult to move. could this just be because the box has been stood for a while and there a little tight or do I need another 1098 box?
Anyone got a box I could borrow or buy?

It may indeed be because it has been standing and all the oil has drained away. Have you taken the side cover off for a good look inside at the state of the little dog teeth on the 2/3/4 gears - and the teeth on 1st gear and the laygear? Is this 'tightness' as the box sits - before you do any mods to it?
This tightness is with or without the modded tail on. it felt a little tight when I got it with the proper remote tail. It does go into gear with some effort. perhaps spraying some oil about and exercising the forks back and forth could help? :/
Yes -absolutely - a good spray on the moving parts with thin oil will surely help. I guess there will be two gaskets - one each side of the thin plate.
Yes one either side of the spacer plate.
I have had a squirt around with some oil and moved the lever around loads and it appears to have done the trick (I hope!). The box does feel much tighter than the 803 one but I guess it's quite a lot different. after moving the lever around I think I managed to get it into reverse and get the lever onto the 3/4 selector while it was still in reverse :/ Hopefully a bit more fettling and all will come together
Another thing I noticed was 3/4 is a much shorter throw than 1/2 is that normal?
Well done -great picture. I was using my Trav yesterday and took particular note of the throw - I have to say much the same 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 on my (probably rather worn) gearbox.

Yes I think it was just the tightness of the box. Now it's all together they seem about the same. The new box feels so much better than my knackered old 803 one. I will update you all in a few days after I've done a few journeys
