Looks like you have an SU H1 carb as fitted to 803cc with 1' 1/8 inlet.
Esm have the gasket set and rebuild kits listed but no complete carbs

Was it dribbling from the jet - or overflowing the float bowl?

Yes SU H1 Carb.
Minor carb details from sucarb.co.uk/Burlen Ltd, Salisbury.
AUC452, H1. 1951/52
AUC704, H1. 1953 >
AUC738, H1. 1954/56.
I cannot make out the number cast into the side of the carb reference your picture?
There is usually a tab attached to the carb with the AUC number stamped on it.
There are minor(excuse the pun) differences with the above carbs and it is best if you can quote the number of the attached tab.
Looked again and noticed that the remains of the AUC tab minus the AUC number are under the float chamber top nut.

Looks like AUC 601 - but that may just be the body number - not the finished assembly.

SU H1 Semi downdraught, ie the carb is at an angle and the float chamber is horizontal. The Series MM also has an SU H1 carb but it is mounted horizontally.
Your piston damper should have a brass cap, not plastic

H1 carb containing horrible cork seals which are very temperamental and prone to rot away over time.
Where precisely is it leaking from?
Note the cork seals must be soaked in clean engine oil for at least 24hrs prior to fitment.

Cheers Guys.
Looks like it was leaking from around the float chamber.
Will re-build it with seal kit. Its a H1 with 601 coding on the side.
Real mismatch with this car, 948cc with an earlier carb!

Then get rid of it altogether as the H1 will be a real handicap.

Fit an SU HS2 better than an H2 unless you want to keep it looking original

I bet you'd get one for less than you're paying for that repair kit. I've got 2 carbs which are surplus to requirement- complete with manifolds, off 948 engines. Let me know if you want one, as I'd sell it for not too much.
