Stub axle removal
Is it possible to remove the front stub axles? Thanks
Re: Stub axle removal
get it hot and put it on something hard and hit the leg where the stub goes through as hard as you can with a Big hammer,to release the taper. just undo the nut a little so that the threads are protected, just incase you miss with the hammer.

Re: Stub axle removal
The stub axle isn't on a taper... I assume you are thinking of the steering arm Ken?
To remove the stub axle from the swivel/leg isn't difficult, but you do need a press.
Basically take the hub off, put the nut back on so the top of the nut is very slightly proud of the threaded section and use a press to push it through the leg. Its might be rather tight. I have done 2 of them. One required the full pressure that my press can exert (10 tonnes) + shocking with a hammer, the other pressed out pretty easily
Again, why do you want to remove the stub axle?

Re: Stub axle removal
Easy IF you happen to have a handy 10 ton press.......i'll just nip out and see if I have one in the garage...
Re: Stub axle removal
Doesn't everyone have a ten tonne press?
Presumably you then need to press a new axle in again?

Re: Stub axle removal
yes you will need a press to put it back in again
Without a press I would suggest you are wasting your time...
I don't think you can buy them seperately from the swivels - but you could ring a couple of suppliers and ask?
Although there is one NOS one on ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MORRIS-MINOR- ... 485wt_1074
and another that didn't sell
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MORRIS-MINOR- ... 3a83b3b8c3
Both are missing the "circlip" that goes on the back to locate the stub axle at the correct depth and stop it pulling through

Re: Stub axle removal
If you are desperate for a Minor stub axle I still have the two (R&L) with retaining rings which I removed from the 8cwt van uprights and replaced with Marina stub axles. It only took 4.5 tons to press out the stub axle whereas the Marina stub axle took 11.5 tons to press out.
Both 8cwt van uprights were NOS and had not been modified in any way.

To fit marina hubs without the need for adaptor sleeves is my guess?

Re: Stub axle removal
Matt is partly right.
I have Marina disc brakes fitted to my Minor.
The Marina stub axles are of a bigger diameter than the Morris Minor so inherently stronger and you can fit Marina wheel bearings/hubs without having to fit a bearing spacer to carry the inner bearing.
That said you will still need to have the bearing spacer and modify it by removing the bearing carrier part and fit and Loctite in place the remaining part on which the oil seal rubs on. This modification to the bearing carrier has to be done as the Marina oil seal has a different/larger internal diameter.
The Minor and Marina uprights are of similar dimensions in the area of the stub axle so even by opening up the Minor stub axle hole for the Marina stub axle you are not loosing if at all any of the upright strength.
You can have the stub axles/retaining rings and hub nuts for £5 each side plus Post and Packing.

Re: Stub axle removal
As far as I remember, you don't need the bearing spacer at all, once a marina stub axle has been fitted. I did have an 'upright' that had this very modification and as far as I recall, the hub bearing/oilseal assembly just bolted straight on.
Re: Stub axle removal
We still don't know why you want to change the stub axles - are they damaged?? And if you do the change - be SURE to put the correct stub in each swivel pin! The LH pin must have the LH thread stub axle.......

I can assure you that you DO need a spacer to make up the difference between the diameter of Minor oil seal seat on the upright and the internal diameter of the Marina oil seal. The easiest way to make up the required spacer is to remove the bearing seat from the bearing adaptor.
If you do not have the spacer you will have grease everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have attached a photo of the Minor upright and the spacer required to accommodate the Marina oil seal before being loctited in place.[frame][/frame]

Re: Stub axle removal
That's interesting. And on that point, I'm going the other route and have had a marina hub machined and purchased an appropriate size bearing to fit (30205).
The oil seal as you point out would still be a problem (not fitted yet). So instead I'm fitting a different oil seal. Well we'll see, as said not fitted yet.

Re: Stub axle removal
The marina hubs I have just removed been machined out to take standard minor bearings - Its also a standard minor oil/grease seal I think

I have to say I would not take the route that you have taken regarding the fitment of Marina stub axles into Minor uprights/swivels because to me it is easier and cheaper to get the spacer (Pt No: MOD118A @ £10 each) from Bull Motif and modify it (which is easy) than get the hub modified and purchase and install a different bearing and seal. I have also taken into account that I have several spare Marina hubs, several new Marina bearing sets and several spare Marina stub axles. Therefore in the main you end up using standard/off the shelf parts except for the seal spacer and those Marina parts may be easier to obtain and replace in the future.
Did you get your modified uprights with the Marina stub axle fitted from CS Autoclassics? They were the first to undertake the stub axle modification and my first pair of modified uprights came from them many years ago. They also manufactured and supplied the spacer for the oil seal. Unfortunately they no longer do the Marina stub axle modification or oil seal spacer so that is why I have to use the modified Bull Motif bearing spacer.
