Rubber Sump Gasket

Post by minor65 »

I removed the sump on my 65 traffy blue minor about 10 years ago, cleaned it out and replace the sump gasket with the conventional gasket and 'U' cork gaskets at the end. This year I have now noticed that oil is dripping from the rear of the sump at the 'U' bit and running down the rear back plate and dripping on the floor. I resume its the cork gasket that has probably gone hard and not effective anymore.

My question is does anyone know if there is a rubber gasket opinion, possibly from a mini ? I would fit the original type but don't really like them.

Rubber ones are available from Moss Europe. http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewP ... dexID=1375 item 166.

I bought a set of these but didn't end up fitting them as I finally got knack of cutting cork ones to length, which have been fine ever since. I left about 3/16'' (or not quite 1/4'') proud on each side, tightened up to about 7ib feet then retightened after a week.

I gather the rubber ones need trimming too as they are too long for a 1098, but stand to be corrected.

Either way, it's not expensive and should take too much time. A good long socket extension helps enormously.

Why not just try nipping up the sump screws as they are... Is the oil definitely running down from the sump - and not from the bellhousing/jiggle pin?

I have tried to tighten them, got about a quarter turn on each but has made no difference. I have cleaned everything and can see a drip of oil sitting between the sump and the rear plate. And a track of oil running down the back plate to a drip at the bottom of the back plate, then it hits the floor. Jiggle pin and gearbox dry.

Should keep the rust at bay, it's called chassis lubrication :)

Yeah will fit new corks. I think I'll leave it to next year, as I've just changed the oil in it

It doesn't NEED to be any better for a simple A series! My concern was that you may have used a lower viscosity oil - and it was therefore more prone to leaking.....
