Hello all,

I recently discovered that one of the heater hoses on my car (late 1000) has perished and I have therefore acquired some new heater hoses to fit.

Whilst I guess that in principle it should be a relatively straightforward job - i.e. drain coolant, remove & replace hoses and refill - I can forsee some potential problems: mainly the problem of coolant spilling into the car when the heater matrix ends of the hoses are removed, and possible air locks etc when refilling.

Has anyone done this job before? If so, do you have any specific tips/advice so that the job is made a simple as possible for me?

When I did mine I disconnected both hoses at the engine end and blew through them to get almost all of the water out of the matrix. A small amount still got spilt, but hardly any - a rag or two under the clips on the matrix will do the job.

There is no need to drain further coolant from the engine as the heater hoses are the highest point. Just pull them off, blow them through and you're done.

I remember it being a little fiddly but only taking about 15minutes start to finish.

I used 1ply silicone hoses when I did mine recently, they're cheaper than rubber ones which perish.

You want 13mm / 1/2" internal diameter, I found 3m was plenty[frame][/frame]

Just ordered my silicone hose from them having read this post. Many thanks for the tip!

For jobs like this where oil or water may get spilt you can use a disposable nappy as they soak up the spill and contain it, like on an infant (in theory)……
I have got the silicone hoses, fit and forget solution.

For older members, or those with grannies, the big Tena clones look useful, must remember to borrow some from mum.

My only gripe with the silicone hoses is that they attract all the grit and dust that's in the vicinity, so take care when fitting them not to leave them on the garage floor or whatever as they're rather hard to clean...

Fitted mine the other day after the old dodgy heater tap exploded! (Hence the rusty water covering my engine bay).

Any tips on cleaning out the bay? Mr muscle and a hose? What about cleaning off the dizzy and electric bits? Cheers
