Squealing Noise

Okay lovely people, diagnoses please if possible. Ive got a squealing in time with the engine (only above 1,000rpm) that is also intermitent (will stop for a mile, then start then stop). Coupled with what looks like very small blue flames coming from a section of the wiring loom. near the distributor and starter motor, although i cant see this as much any more. Ive had an alternator conversion done but that was over 2000 miles ago and the fan belt doesnt seem lose or tight so i dont think it can be that... Any ideas?

Thankyou!

The belt should be TIGHT. Flames are worrying - do you only see that in the dark? If so = perhaps just old HT leads - although doesn't explain noise. Is the starter perhaps 'stuck in' and being spun round at great speed by the engine?

Ir you have an old or slightly loose fan belt it is more likely to squeal with an alternator

The squeeling could also be coming from a bearing in the alternator, a friend of mine had it with a dodgy one he fitted to his mini...

Easy test - remove the belt... Then fit a NEW one....
