Rear damper link nut size

Post by Tom and Maria »

Had the MOT today and failed on a few things, one of which was a worn rear damper link. Does anyone know the size of the nuts, both the one that holds the link to the damper arm and the one that joins to the body?

Other fails were:

Rear brake lights flashing when the indicators were on. Sorted this, not sure how but it was caused by a bad earth.
Steering gaiter - easy fix
Rough rear wheel bearing (new two years ago!) have an NOS one to fit
Corrosion to boot floor - never mind, the panel's cheap.
Leaky damper at the front.

Not too bad I think, for an every day car!

From memory they are 3/8" BSF. You will also need a ball joint splitter for the bottom connection. If you don't have the correct spanner a 15mm six sided socket is the best fit. :D

Great, thanks. I do have a splitter so all fine hopefully. As always looks like an easy job if things come undone as they ought to.

I reckon the hardest part will be lining up the holes for the split pin in the top link connection. :D

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure my top link connection pins don't have holes for split pins. I will need to drill through (a pain) or maybe I can substitute nyloc nuts instead of the castle ones?

At some point the pin may have been broken while trying to remove it and someone just wound the nut off filling the hole. Replace them for nylocks as the mot man will expect split pins if you leave the castle nuts on.

Fit a nyloc and a good smear of copperslip. I'd say use a stainless nyloc but I'm sure that would open another debate :)

I would suggest that smearing a thread with Copper Ease and then fitting a nylock nut defeats the object of the self gripping action of the nylon.
Once the nylock nut has been fitted then smear the outside of the nut/thread with Copper Ease.
