Gearbox Rear Oil Seal Extractor

Does anyone know where I can obtain a gearbox rear oil seal extractor tool (?) vehicle is a 1970 Traveller with ribbed gearbox casing.

Not sure if there is such a thing, the usual way is to (very carefully) use a hammer and chisel to tap it off - alternating from opposite sides to keep it reasonably straight coming off. I found this quite difficult laying on my back so I resorted to a Stillson wrench to twist it off.

There is such a beast - special tool Pt No: 18G389A and is used with basic tool 18G389.
They sometimes come up for sale on 'e' bay.

Just tap it off evenly all round, just dont go mad and it will be fine.

It is crimped in a couple of places around the rim, so it's not just a case of 'tapping' it off. If the crimps are not filed or ground away the alloy tailpiece of the gearbox will be damaged.

Don't imagine that fitting a new 'seal' (it's only felt) will cure an oil leak here. The real problem will be a loose joint in the prop shaft which in turn has probably caused wear in the brass bush in the tail of the extension........

Hope my gearbox man will know this, just taken mine in for leaking from back end for second time,
( different company this time ) Read somewhere about reaming being required, don't fully understand
this. Does the the prop shaft need to be matched up ?

The reaming thing is needed if/when a new tailshaft bush is fitted, because when the bush is first installed it needs opening out just enough to allow the propshaft to have a running clearance, hence reaming. The bush is a bit of a game to extract and refit but a leak from that area is likely to point to wear in this bush as well as the need to renew the felt seal. I don't know who is looking at your gearbox but don't take it for granted that they will change the bush, unless they have the equipment they may well want to give it a miss. Again they may be fine and if it's needed will do it.

The rear oil seal that I fitted was not just felt-it's a proper lip seal.

Early seals may have been felt but a 1970s Minor would have had a lip seal (Pt No: 2A3061 (MOSS) (948cc/1098cc)) and used special tool No: 18G134 (basic tool) and 18G134L (gearbox rear oil seal replacer adapter) when fitting the lip seal/shroud assy.

Hi Guys
Here is a simple oil seal removal tool made from an old hub cap removal tool, a piece of heavy metal drilled to fit over and a nut welded on the end to act as a slide hammer.
