Cylinder Head torquing

Having steam cleaned engine and bay and also replaced the timing seal and cover I find I have a weeping cylinder head at the front end over cylinder 1 (radiator end).

Do I simply torque down the relevant bolts or am I looking at a more complicated procedure or even replace the gasket?

Is it head to block? If so, new gasket required.
If however, it is rocker cover to head, just clean and seal with a thin smear of liquid gasket assuming the cork seal hasn't been squashed flat by over tightening.

It's head to block. Rocker cover seems fine.

Never removed a cylinder head. No where did I put that manual?

Thinking about this further, I'd just re-torque the head and keep my eye on it. The oil way is outside of the cylinder bores so it could go on for quite a while before you got any adverse effects to performance.

Pull it down evenly to 44 ft lbf and cross your fingers. Was the head disturbed recently ?

Thanks guys. Cylinder head not been off in my ownership of 30 months.

I assume I re-torque all head bolts starting in the middle and working out spirally?

Yes, that is correct.

This is the correct sequence of undoing and doing up/setting the torque of the 9 stud cylinder head nuts.[frame]Image[/frame]
Some other workshop manuals start the tightening sequence at No: 2 above but the schematic is as recommended in the Minor Wksp manual section AA Fig: AA5.

Thanks guys esp Philthehill for the drawing. My working spirally would have been a bit different! Will report back in a few weeks to see what the results are.

Cheers for now.

If you haven't got a Workshop Manual - download it free - just search for 'Morris Minor Workshop Manual'....it's there and free.

Hi Bmcecosse - got the workshop manual which I was given a week or two after my birthday when I bought the car. Trouble is can't find it! Not looked too hard and last had it in UK over summer so could be in the garage somewhere I suppose instead of the bookcase where it's meant to be.

Might just download a copy though. Thanks for the tip.
