What Engine do I have

Post by andy.pointeer »

We have recently acquired a 4 Door saloon and wish to confirm what type of engine it has. Was sold as a 1275 A+ series, but not sure what car its from. I would like more information on the engine to determine what is required for the servicing etc. It does not have an engine number on the block.

http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=63696

See pictures below for numbers etc on the block and head.

The carburettor has what I think is another vacuum connection, if this is blocked the engine stops. Do I need to put in a ‘Y’ and join to other pipe from canister? See picture below.

Any information that can be provided would be most appreciated

Looks like a Marina engine. The position of the oil filter gives it away, don't think any other in-lie A+ engines had it in that position.
The extra port on the carb is the float chamber overflow, I would pipe it down out of the way of the exhaust just in case you get a leak.

Yes, looks like Marina. It's an A-series, not an A+ (it doesn't have ribbed strengthening on the block), so it's not one of the later Marina ones or an Ital one.

Looking at the manifolds side of the engine there aren't any tappet chest covers, and the block does look a bit ribby don't you think

Hmm, agreed it's hard to see, but I'm pretty certain that that's a bit of grey paint or something that looks like a vertical rib!

Re tappet chest covers, if I'm not mistaken, most of the 1275s (with perhaps the exception of some of the very early ones like on my old 1968 Riley Kestrel) didn't have tappet chest covers.

Your engine is an Marina/Ital 'A' Plus 1275cc.
Compare your engine with this bare Marina/Ital 'A' Plus engine and the additional ribbing on your block confirms it to be a 'A' Plus 1275cc engine.[frame]Image[/frame]

Thank you for the quick responses, I did think it was a Marina as the running gear has all be changed to Marina(disk/back axle), but just wanted to be sure.

I can now do the service before I take it for its MOT on the 9 May

Thanks again

Methinks the distributor clamp confirms it's a 1275 A+

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought only Itals (not Marinas) had the A+ engine

The 1275cc 'A' plus was fitted to the Ital at its launch in June 1980.
It was not fitted to the 1275cc Marina.
The term Marina/Ital is used widely as a generic term - the new Ital was originally going to be called the Morris Marina Ital but Edwards put a stop to that name being used.
Here is a link to Marina/Ital information:-

http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/cars/mo ... t-history/

Note the piece on the 'Green Viva' used for development work - extended Minor floor pan welded to a Viva body.

Thanks again for all the responses.

The WIX WL7231 oil filter will be ok.
UNIPART GFE150 oil filters were fitted ex factory.
I bought several UNIPART NOS boxed ones off 'e' bay for next to nothing.
