Propshaft Problems

Post by BTU268F »

Hi, just checking out my propshaft before refitting to the car and noticed this at the gearbox end. From the photo there is a small metal disc at the spline end of the shaft that is coming away from inside the joint. The ends of the splines can just about be seen through the gap. Doesn't look right is this repairable?

Any comments much appreciated.[frame]Image[/frame]

If you take the propshaft to a specialist they can fit a new end and re balance it. Or it may be cheaper to aquire a 2nd hand propshaft

The propshaft looks as if the end of the gearbox output shaft has been banging against the disc - I would suggest that you check that you have adequate clearance between the shaft and the disk when the propshaft is fitted and the car has all four wheels on the ground.
How is your rear suspension condition?
The front of the propshaft slides backwards and forwards over the gearbox as the suspension rises and falls and any excessive suspension movement could cause the gearbox output shaft to bang against the disc - there should be at least 2 1/2" backwards and forwards movement of the front of the propshaft over the gearbox output shaft when the propshaft is fitted.
I would also suggest that a 2nd hand propshaft is the easiest way to rectify the problem but again check the clearance and condition of the suspension including rear suspension body mounts.
