Trunnion welch plug failure
Checking the swivel pin which is ok, when i greased it the welch plug popped off, and closer inspection showed that someone had tried to weld it on, and that there is not enough metal to 'rivet' a new one on. I have an idea as to how I will repair it, but wondered if there is a common remedy for this.

Re: Trunnion welch plug failure
Rather than trust a weld repair why not buy a brand new one .I'm sure they're quite cheap to buy new.

Re: Trunnion welch plug failure
I've got new trunnions - and the plugs are a very loose fit. Interested to learn how others have dealt with this issue.
Re: Trunnion welch plug failure
As it was chucking it down this afternoon, and the cricket was on the radio I decided to spend time in the garage and repair it as below, but I'd still be interested to know if there is an alternative.

An acceptable and workable solution. Well done.
The welch plug used to be available as an individual part but does not seem to be currently available.

The welch plug just sits a recess in the bottom of the bottom trunnion and the side is mechanically peened over so making the welch plug captive.
If the welch plug is loose just tighten the peen with a hammer.

Re: Trunnion welch plug failure
Phil,
They are available from:
http://www.coreplugs.co.uk/index.php?ro ... path=74_62
I just measured the lower trunnion (with my seals) core plug and this one was 13/16". That is where I buy the core plugs to repair the suspension dampers!
Nice repair job Gavin!-looks professional.
Regards
Declan

Re: Trunnion welch plug failure
I have experienced the same problem with lower trunnions purchased from B.M. They were a loose push in fit and not swaged over as the original MM bronze trunnions were. I cured this by silver brazing the plug into position using 'Johnson Mattey' easy flo no. 2 with appropriate flux. A perfect solution.
