If it is a Ford gearbox as mine is you will have to access the filler plug from below. If I remember correctly it is on the N/S of the gearbox casing about halfway up/down. It is usually a tight fit to get at.
The Ford gearbox uses 75W 90 Semi-synthetic . Other gearboxes may use a different oil - so I would advise you to determine what gearbox is fitted.

are you sure they are spare cables looks to me like they are the only feed from alternator to battery terminal I can only see the red positive lead on the battery terminal(You state charging problems) and from the look of them they have burnt out probably by chaffing against the end of the retaining bar then shorting out ,looks like signs of arcing . Its possible that If this is the case your alternator may also be caput. Could be wrong but without physical exam not possible to be certain from photo.
