I've always done it with the handbrake off - I figure the cables inside the shroud are more likely to sit in the middle of the shroud, letting the grease get all the way around. But to be honest I don't know if that's correct.

Greasing the handbrake cables should be done with the handbrake off.
Tension on the inner cable does not allow the grease to circulate around and through the length of the cable as it should.

Handbrake off, but make sure that the vehicle is safe - axle stands under the rear should give plenty of room to reach the nipples.

Many thanks guys! I have always done it with the handbrake off before but.......had a moment of doubt for some reason!
I can just about squeeze under the car without raising it on stands but its increasingly a tight squeeze! (

I used to be able to get under mine without jacking - tyres must have gone down over the years!

Maybe the main tyres aren't as well inflated as the 'spare'? I have that problem.
