Gear selection
After having my 948 two door garaged for the winter (started fine), I went to select reverse which was difficult & could not be selected
Now the gear lever will not select the forward gears & will not shift towards rear gear
Before I consider gear box removal etc, any thoughts would be welcome

Re: Gear selection
Sounds like a stuck clutch to me. How to free it rather depends on your surroundings. If possible select first gear with the engine off then start the engine and the car will lunge forwards. Hit the brakes with the clutch padal down and it should free. This may need doing several times.
Of course it will need your judgement on where you can safely do this and the car may need to be pushed or towed to a suitable position.

Re: Gear selection
Tried the gear lever will not budge,
it moves left right, but will not engage any forward gears (or go towards selecting reverse)

Re: Gear selection
Is this with the engine running? Is there grating noises if the engine is running?
Re: Gear selection
Thanks
There are no noises when the engine is running, when the clutch pedal is depressed all seems quite normal, just can’t engage the forward gears nor move the gear lever towards to reverse

Re: Gear selection
Definitely sounds like a ‘ stuck’ clutch through standing for a long period . Freed mine on a couple of vehicles by having the vehicle on a slope . Putting it in second ( no engine running ) depressing the clutch ( holding it down ) and then starting up and going down hill . Came off with a hell of a bang . Fortunate to live rural with access to a long sloping track ( no other traffic ) . Fairly certain I have the sequence correct , long time since I did it .

Re: Gear selection
If it was simply a stuck clutch plate it would make a deal of noise when attempting to select a gear with the engine running. It would also select at least one gear if the engine was not running.

Re: Gear selection
Agree with that , hence my comment of selecting a gear with no engine running . If that isnt possible and the problem has only occurred since the vehicle was left standing its beyond my limited knowledge !!!!!!
Re: Gear selection
before anyone can help...........can you select a gear with the engine NOT running
Re: Gear selection
Sadly the gear lever will not engage any forward gears with or without the engine running
the gear lever moves left to right but will not go towards the rear gear

Re: Gear selection
Then it is the gear selectorat fault and not the clutch. That is at least a start for diagnosis.
Re: Gear selection
Thanks - the gearbox is on its way out of the car.
