The 'behive ' spring is used to keep the brake shoe against the back plate.
They hook onto a bracket fixed on the back plate behind the hole in the shoe.
BMC found that the brake shoe when applied came away from the back plate and wore the lining unevenly across the shoe.
Many owners throw them away but they are there for a purpose and should be retained.
They are only used on the rear brake shoes.

Re: Brake Spring
I agree that they should be fitted, but they can be difficult to fit, which is why they get left off. You will need to push them in and then twist so that the hook engages in the tab. Various tools are available such as a screwdriver with a notch cut in the end or a pair of long nosed pliers with a washer over the jaws - the washer allows the jaws to open just far enough to grip the stem of the spring but then will not slide any further up and so allows you to push and compress the spring prior to turning. You need four springs, one for each rear shoe; plus a spare for when you either break or lose the one that you are trying to fit.
