Piston Suppliers

Post by pgp001 »

Hi

Can anyone suggest a supplier of good quality 0.020" oversize 1098 pistons please. Preferably New Old Stock if possible.

My local re-bore company has quoted either Nural (AE Autoparts), Hepolite, or Wellworthy at £47.50 + VAT each.
I wondered if I can buy them somewhere a bit cheaper than that myself to save a bit of money on my rebuild.

I know the usual suppliers have pistons listed at half that price, but I am not convinced they will be of the same quality as a recognised British make. Or are they all made in China these days even the named ones ?

Thanks
Phil

For consideration:-

Made in Germany as well.

You could even consider buying a good used set of pistons and putting new rings on them.

For example - I am in slow time rebuilding a 948cc engine to 998cc and am using very good condition used genuine BMC, 3 ring pistons which will be fitted with new good quality rings mated to used 998cc/1098cc rods. Other used engine parts will be incorporated in the build as well.

I consider it acceptable to fit good (but must be within in manufactures spec) used pistons with new rings to new bores but would never consider fitting used pistons to used bores.
Not everything has to be brand new to get reliability and performance.

Expensive is not always best for ones pocket or engine 8) .

Phil

The ebay supplier of Karl Schmidt pistons looks to be the best bet for me. He also has +0.040" pistons available and I was thinking of just going for those and skipping the +0.020" altogether, the chances of me wearing it out again and needing another re-bore are pretty remote.
That would also ensure there would be enough material in the bores to rebore them, I dont want to buy the +0.020" ones only to be told the bores are too worn for them to clean up to that size.

However I have just been looking in Haynes manual, and it says that there are only two re-bore sizes available on the 1098, namely +.010" and +0.020"
This does not sound right to me, can you advise if I will be OK with the +0.040" ones please.

I have just stripped the rest of the engine to the bare block today and there are no other nasties that cannot be easily sorted out so I should be good to go.

Thanks

I cannot find any reason stopping the 1098cc engine from being over bored by plus 0.040"

There was some concern that early 1098cc blocks were in reality 850cc blocks bored out to 1098cc which may cause a problem if severely over bored.

Later blocks were genuine 1098cc so should cause little concern. Change over engine number not known if indeed the 850cc block was bored out to 1098cc.

Plus 0.040" pistons/rings are available from MOSS

plus 0.060" pistons/rings are also available.

A 1098cc block over bored by 0.060" will give a swept volume of 1150cc.

I can't help putting in a plug for little ol' Adelaide and JP pistons that I often saw in the UK. We don't make much anymore with our automotive manufacturing crashing, most recently with Holdens and the spin off of all those associated industries crashing, but to my knowledge JP is still producing pistons in the suburb of Windsor Gardens and one of the few things not 'outsourced' to China.

But I agree with the suggestion on use of used pistons if not showing wear, in particular check the ring groove that can wear.
