Had to replace the exhaust manifold gasket on my 1967 2 door.
On seperating manifold from the exhaust it came off with a slight struggle but nothing major.
However, after changing the gasket I'm having problems getting a good seal between the manifold and exhaust with the result the exhaust blows at the joint.
From what I can see the two parts don't slide into each other to form a good fit, the bottom of the manifold strangely just seems to rest on the top of exhaust which is slightly 'flared'.
My local garage had a bash and after a day the joint started blowing.
They didnt want to slap a lot of sealing compound around the joint and were using a new clamp.
Am I missing something or it just a case of persisiting ????
Thanks

Re: EXHAUST TO MANIFOLD PROBLEMS
Separate the exhaust from the manifold, make sure that there is no deformation to the cone of the exhaust pipe, grease all contact surfaces and re-assemble. Wiggle the exhaust pipe during tightening of the clamp so as to get a good contact between the two faces.
It may smoke a bit on warming up but the method above has never failed me yet.
The cast iron clamp is the best and the four piece pressed steel the worst.

Re: EXHAUST TO MANIFOLD PROBLEMS
There is also a trick to install a piece if solid copper wire 1.5mm² or 2.5mm² wrapped around under the lip as a gasket on the exhaust before mounting the clamp. I tried it several times before I bought the LCB and it worked.

Re: EXHAUST TO MANIFOLD PROBLEMS
Thanks for that.
Unable to wiggle the manifold into the exhaust since it's already bolted on, exhaust also bolted up tight so next to no movement in either.
Is it best I do the following :
Take manifold back off then wiggle (if possible) into the exhaust, clamp up with suggested clamp, then bolt manifold back on.
Should I be using a sealing paste at the joint ??
Here's the link for the clamp I've got, I take it this is the worst type.

Re: EXHAUST TO MANIFOLD PROBLEMS
Yes,
They are useless. Use the one on Phil's link. Make sure the joint is clean. No sealant required. Use a jack under the silencer to hold the exhaust up tight against the manifold while tightening the clamp.

Re: EXHAUST TO MANIFOLD PROBLEMS
i had problems with mine, and was always surprised that the downpipe is not braced, so whenever the engine moves under acceleration / deceleration, the joint takes all the stress, as the exhaust wont probably move that much. Consequently I made up a simple strap bracket between the dowpipe and the gearbox flange, similar to the standard fitment on an MG Midget.

Re: EXHAUST TO MANIFOLD PROBLEMS
Leave the manifold alone - as I said above - wiggle the pipe to the manifold whilst doing up the clamp bolts.
You have to undo the clamp bolts to wiggle the exhaust pipe.
The wiggle beds the cone of the pipe onto the manifold.
