ive around 8 very small magnets around my oil filter (screw on type) that are held in place by a strip of gaffa tape. when replacinging the filter, I cut the magnets out and stick them to the new filter. the crap it collects is unreal. I also have the sump plug magnet.

Would be surprised if the surface temperature of the oil filter or sump ever got to 80c. Unless someone knows different.

As MikeNash has said, his oil temperature gets to 80 C if he tries hard. Getting back to Neodymium magnets, I'm sure that mounting some on the filter housing and sump would be a good idea. They are so much stronger than ferrite magnets that a, say, 2mm thick PTFE sheet between the magnet and the metal should solve the heat problem whilst giving the benefit of the magnetic field. Neodymium magnets are so strong that they would probably hold the PTFE in place but probably better to mechanically fix as well. Just an idea.

There is little point in placing magnets on the side or bottom of the sump as to remove/clean any captured steel/iron crud from the inside of the sump the sump will have to be removed.
Much better to place the magnets on the oil filter body or easily removable parts like the drain plug.

bought six of them ( around £8 ) and I know they are STRONG , as have used them before , the idea of not just sticking them to the oil filter individually but making a type of belt to hold them in position...

First idea is leather and JBWeld , will keep you posted...
