Clutch noise

On depressing the clutch to its fullest extent, further than necessary for normal operation, I’m getting a tac-tac-tac-tac noise.

It is not a rattle. It sounds more like a rotating part coming into contact with a stationery part and the rate varies with engine revs. It seems consistent with the clutch withdrawing too far and coming into contact with something it shouldn’t.

It is possible to avoid completely, simply by not depressing the pedal to its utmost extent and the car drives normally.

She has a Marina 1275 on a Toyota Celica gearbox using the old Charles Ware bellhousing. Not had it apart, so your guess is as good as mine on the clutch internals.

Safe to ignore, or dust off the engine crane?

My advice for what it is worth - do not ignore.
Get out the engine crane and take the engine out and see what the problem is.
Better safe than sorry as it is not going to get better...……….

Goodness knows what clutch you have in all that (?) or whether you still even have a mechanical linkage? IF you do, I would suggest adjusting the clutch so that the pedal doesn't go down that far as a simple starting point.
