Odd Brake Problem

Post by mobylette »

Went for a nice spin yesterday, about 10 miles. everything fine, then almost home going slowly in traffic I noted a very strong pull to the right when braking. The problem continued until I reached home. I dropped off the wife and drove around the block a couple of times, slamming on the brakes, after three or four applications all returned to normal. Took it for a test run just now and all is fine. Its as if a brake cylinder was temporarily sticking, but I can't see how. No change in brake pedal height or any other symptoms. Front brakes are Riley 1.5, any ideas?. I will take the drum off when the weather warms up.

left side brake cylinder sticking .needs looking at,because in an emergency braking situation could stick again causing, problem, might just need piston cleaning ,and refitting, or new cylinder to be on the safe side. Slamming on the brakes has freed it up.but could stick again.

I have had this before. I stripped and replaced all the seals in all the cylinder and applied red grease to the bore. This fixed the issue.

Mobylette,
I would suggest a complete brake overhaul-not just the front.

Whilst the front brakes are dismantled check the condition of the adjusters.
The Riley 1.5 front brake adjusters are prone to coming loose in the brake backplate and which can interfere with the brake operation.
When the Riley 1.5 brakes were fitted on the front of my Minor I had to replace a couple of the brake adjuster snail cam assemblies.
After market kits are available for replacing the adjusters.

Thanks Phil, I have a set of NOS adjusters in the boot. Will check them out when I have the drums off.

Hi mobylette

I am curious about your username, the reason being that my first ever motor vehicle on the road was a 1966 Mobylette moped when I was 16 years old back in 1972.
I had plenty of other motorbikes and tractors etc prior to that, but it was the first thing I could use legally on the road.
I probably should have kept it, I suppose it will be a collectors item now.

Hi Phil, I've had loads of bikes over the years, but I think the first one I rode was my mates dad's Mobylette. Aged about 14, we used to liberate it under cover of darkness and hurtle about the local streets, and his dad was a cop! Happy days.

Thanks John,

I had to fit new hoses when I fitted the Riley brakes as they do not match the original hoses, but when I get round to checking I will keep this in mind. To cold at the moment.
