Replacement gearbox for my 948 (1959) Morris minor

Post by markharrison »

My smooth case gearbox recently died. I want to have a ford t9 gearbox fitted. What else do I need to buy?
The guy that is doing the work is a very experienced mechanic and military vehicle enthusiast. He has many many vintage and classic car owners come exclusively to his garage, so I know he will do a good job. What should I pay for a reconditioned gearbox? I see them at anything from £450 to £680.

For the fitting requirements see the link below and the fitting instructions contained within the link.

The type 9 gearbox is easy to overhaul and parts are cheap.

Make sure that you get the right first motion shaft.

Here are a couple of examples of a type 9 gearbox and the type/level of price I would be expecting to pay.

And make sure you get the the mechanical speedo drive and not the electrical one. Your speedo will be way out and you will not know by how much until you test drive it as the T9 has several different speedo drive gear options. If you purchase a gearbox from Hi-Gear Engineering it comes with a drain plug on the bottom which the T9 does not have as standard.

You'll need the prop shaft modding to the right length and the output shaft ( what is it called ? ) for the gearbox fitting , a concentric clutch slave cylinder would be nice...and saves having an operating arm sticking out...

The mechanical speedo is not too difficult to modify and speedo drive cables available..

The front of the propshaft has to be changed to suit the output shaft (normally called the 3rd motion shaft) of the Ford gearbox.
To achieve the change I obtained a Ford propshaft and removed the front part of the shaft and fitted it to the Minor shaft (the U/Js are the same) and then worked out how long the revised length of the propshaft needed to be. It was then sent to a professional propshaft company for shortening and balancing.

I chose to remove the dirt shroud so that a clearer picture of the amount of Ford propshaft that was actually in the tail-shaft housing of the gearbox could be determined.

There has to be a determined amount of clearance between the gearbox tail-shaft housing and the U/J because as the rear suspension moves up and down the propshaft slides in and out of the gearbox tail-shaft housing.
