1963 pull starter cable

Post by wearthefoxhat »

Hi Guys. I fitted a starter solenoid (switch) on my 1963 traveller only for the cable to give up at the end which was frayed. The new cable arrived today from Charles Ware but is about 4 times as long (See photo.) The current one is long as it is. There is a fair curve in it before it enters the joining piece.
Is this a cut to fit job or is there a shorter version available? If it needs cutting, the outer casing seems hardened. Any tips on which technique to use?
Thanks

You could shorten it I suppose but if you wanted the proper part and that's what you asked for, you should have been sent one. I would contact a few more specialists and find the correct item if that's the best they can do....... I didn't have any trouble obtaining a starter cable for mine so they ARE around.

I think they might have sent you a choke cable by mistake.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Yes, I now see that other suppliers sell what I'm looking for. (It's alwaystge case)
I have an angle grinder so cutting can be done but need to buy new discs !!
The cable they sent has an S on the black knob so it is a starter cable for something.(but not mine)
I' ll give the company a phone today and update here.

If you have a vice then once you have removed the the inner cable, use a hacksaw and cut to the right length. Then take off the sharp edges with round and flat files.

Thanks for your input guys really helpful. Just to let you know that the supplier said the cable is for various cars and to cut to suit.
I was offered the chance of returning it but decided that the info on here was solid so I cut the outer cable with a standard hacksaw no probs and cut the inner cable with pliers. So job done. Thanks for your help on this one.
