Lower trunnion thrust washers

Re 1098 MM.
The lower trunnions have two thrust washers with a chamfered face. Does the chamfered side go towards the trunnion or outwards suspension arms? Is it there to hold a ring of grease under the rubber seal or to allow the rubber seal to be slid on? I can't make it out from the pictures in my manual.

The chamfered face goes away from the lower trunnion.
The chamfer is to there to allow the washer to fit inside the lower front arms. If the chamfer was not there the square edge of the washer would foul the inside of the lower arms.

Al,

I always fit the chamfer outwards towards the suspension arms to provide a lead-in for the rubber sleeve.

Edit: There is also a good reason for it as Phil describes above!

Thanks everybody for the explanation.

I failed my MOT with a "clunk" from the suspension, hence the complete rebuild. I am beginning to think that it was the clunk behind the steering wheel!
