Not Starting
Ive been tinkering about with the steering and inadvertently left the ignition on for 5 mins
Tried to start and its spinning but not firing
I immediatly thought I had buggered the coil but noticed this pipe
its not the feed or the crankcase breather so what is it ? There was some fuel on the floor.

Re: Not Starting
Looks like its the float chamber breather which im guessing should go to atmosphere so Its not this thats stopping me
I need to get my multimeter out

Re: Not Starting
Five minutes may have been long enough to 'cook' the coil. Remove the dizzy cap and then test for a spark at the king lead with ignition on and, with the points in closed position, flick them open with a little screwdriver a few times. As you have not tinkered with any part of the ignition system and, given the car was previously running but now the ignition has been left on, if there is no spark I would say the coil is dead

Re: Not Starting
I hope so
Coil is easy
Ive got an antiquated electronic ignition system which may be difficult to find

Re: Not Starting
The first thing I do, if an engine won’t start (for an unknown reason) is remove a plug lead, connect it to a known good example and lay it on the engine. Then turn over the engine to check for spark. If a good spark, it is not likely an ignition fault; no spark, or poor spark, means investigate the ignition system. Quite a simple start to a fault diagnosis process.

Re: Not Starting
To be honest, I would not be rooting around for 'an antiquated electronic ignition system' just yet, if at all, until you have diagnosed the current problem. There appears to be circumstantial evidence that the coil is at fault, but this can only be determined by systematic testing (or simple substitution of a known, good coil).

Re: Not Starting
Yep
Agreed
Bearing in mind it was running perfectly .
I have inadvertently left the ignition on for longer than this before with no ill effect.
Im looking for a "simple stupid" solution.
Ive done something silly Im sure.
Fortunately Im at home with auto elecrics so once Ive exhasted that possibility I will be hoping that the sages on this forum will sort out my problem
As usual...

Re: Not Starting
So the coil is fine
Low tension side is 3 ohms
On cranking there is a nice fat spark

So , that plug wasnt like that before
Still not sure about that pipe that goes to atmosphere
I have managed to start but its running as rough as a bears a#@e and wont tick over

Re: Not Starting
Did you perhaps catch the choke cable and pull the outer in the clamp giving full choke?

Disagree! More like ‘Do the simple checks before jumping to unsupported conclusions’.myoldjalopy wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2019 6:32 pm So......the moral of this story is - its never the coil!

The ‘quote’ that you disagree with, was only a light hearted reference to a ‘pet subject’ not to be taken too seriously, of a late respected member of this forum. I think being new to the forum you wouldn’t have met him.

If I am not very much mistaken, next month will mark 3 years since Roy shuffled off his mortal coil.
I, for one, miss his contributions.
