thrust washer catching ??

Post by AnimalJack »

Hi , Ive just put a new engine and gear box in my van (they were both rebuilt by an engineer I bought them from - 5+yrs ago and have been in a dry garage) The engine is sounding very good -but when I depress the clutch pedal ,it sounds like the thrust washer is touching the drive shaft and even though Ive adjusted the pedal in loads of different settings it still does it . The clutch pedal feels a bit solid -only a tiny bit of travel . Im not a mechanic - but Ive swapped a gearbox before and it all went ok . ....Im just wondering if I need to take the gearbox out again -or is there anything I could try first. Thanks for any advice in advance :)

Happy St David's Day to you.

For a starter:-
What engine, what clutch and what gearbox have you fitted?

Hi Phil ,(sorry about the delay -I often have trouble logging into this forum- I keep contacting admin and I changed my password yesterday and it blocked again today  )
Anyhow...... the engine is 1100 and the gearbox is the later type ribbed . the clutch plate was replaced when the engine was rebuilt and I know its a 1098 plate - but only because I have all the receipts- the code on the receipt is com706 and it came from MorrisMinor B'Ham .

Thank you for the reply.

These are the things I would be looking for.

Correct thrust pad. If the thrust pad is incorrect the thrust pad could over centre and hit the gearbox first motion shaft.

Correct clutch release arm. Again if incorrect the thrust pad could over centre and hit the gearbox first motion shaft.

See the link below for additional details:-

Look through the aperture (after removing the bung) in the L/H lower side of the gearbox bell housing - get someone to press the clutch pedal and see what is happening. That should give a good indication of what is going on.
