1275 H-Beam Con Rods

Post by Chipper »

Has anyone tried a set of these rather racy-looking H-beam con-rods in their 1275?

I'm presuming they're probably lighter than the standard ones, and can withstand up to 800 bhp, according to the advert! :o

A good set of original 1275cc Cooper S con rods in EN24V, forging numbers AEG177 or AEG521 will do just as well even in standard form.

The conrods in the link have floating small ends so will require suitable pistons or modified pistons and suitable gudgen pins.

The standard 1275cc Cooper S conrods have interference fit gudgen pins at the small ends.

Note:- Other 1275cc engines also have interference fit gudgen pins.

I have considered the 'H' beam conrods but as I have a perfectly serviceable and reworked set of later Cooper S conrods in EN21, forging number AEG625 fitted to my 1380cc engine and three sets of serviceable 1275cc Cooper S conrods in EN24V on the shelf I see no need to spend money.

It should also be noted that that the 1275cc Midget/Sprite and 1275cc Cooper S crankshaft big end journals are of a different size to other 1275cc engines.

The 1275cc Midget/Sprite/Cooper S journals are 1.625" whilst other 1275cc big end journals are 1.75''.

For non 1275cc Midget/Sprite/Cooper S engines a good set of Innocenti con rods are more than adequate for a moderately tuned 1275cc engine.

Yes, I have a 1275cc Midget 'CE' engine, with IIRC, Cooper 'S' spec con rods (it was donkeys years ago that I rebuilt the engine). They still seem to be holding together pretty well, though I rarely 'cane' the engine nowadays!

Good to know you can buy brand new rods if required though...
