Rear spring shackle.

Post by philthehill »

I am always complaining about the lack of shoulder on the rear shackle pins and poor quality of the BSF threads.
To overcome this I have today modified a pair of 1275cc Midget shackles.
The 1275cc Midget shackles pins are too long and have to be shortened to suit the Minor.
To do this I pressed out the pins from the shackle plates and machined them back leaving a pronounced shoulder.
The 1275cc Midget pins are pressed into the outer plate and the inner plate fits over the shoulders and is secured by two 3/8" UNF nuts & spring washers.
Even though the shackles are ex BMC/Metalastic NOS the bolt on plates are not, they are after market items and do not have the exact same shackle pin centers as the plate with the pressed in pins. So I am having to make new bolt on plates with the correct pin centers.
See photos below. Unmodified shackle on the right.
