Gearbox ...three questions

Post by Andyhereford »

Underneath planning to change gearbox oil and have e noticed
1. The rubber dust cover on the O/S about 6 inches in front of the drain plug covering the clutch leaver is split. This presumably should be replaced and presumably this can be done with the gearbox in situ accepting that it will be quite fiddly.
2. Just behind the joint between the gearbox and the engine there is what appears to be a split pin poking out of the gearbox. Is this how it is supposed to be...the diagrams of the gearbox components (pg. 194 of the workshop manual)appears to show a split pin inside the gearbox but makes no mention of its function.
3. At the back of the gearbox is a cable that passes through the crossmember which it attached to a screw adjuster. This cable is not tight. Should it be
Thanks for any help with these questions

1. Yes, replace the rubber boot, it can be done quite easily once you have moved the clutch release rod out of the way, a bit of WD40 or similar will help the boot go over the clutch lever.

2. The split pin is fitted as standard, people refer to it as a "Jiggle Pin", it is there so that any escaped oil can find a way out of the bell housing, the jiggling split pin prevents the hole from becoming blocked.

3. The cable at the back of the gearbox should be tensioned so that all the slack is taken up and no more, it is there to prevent the engine and gearbox moving forwards on the rubber mountings under heavy braking.

Re the cable attached to the rear of the gearbox.
You've already mentioned having a manual.
Take a look at p81-82.
Engine Steady Cable. Details are there for correct fitment.
