Rear axel - corrosion - mounting pads
Hi,
Recently purchased an eBay 2nd hand rear (back) axel casing.
When it arrived it looked in an okay'ish condition and much as the seller described.
I wasn't paying enough for it to look either clean or shiny.
A friend, Richard, urged a little caution as 'casing are notorious for corrosion at the spring mounting points."
So the clean up I was going to do I did expecting some corrosion.
And corrosion was indeed found, see photos.
The mounting pads that looked complete on initial inspection weren't really there at all after I'd cleared away the silt and the layers of rust and the casing tube has rusted through. The mounting pads will need to be replaced.
My questions
1- Has anyone had experience of letting in repair patch into a 'holed' casing?
2- The mounting pads do not appear to be fitted square to the differential mating face, at what angle are they inclined?
Any other advice would be very welcome.

That does appear to be heavily corroded... maybe consider scrapping that one and getting one in better condition?
Re: Rear axel - corrosion - mounting pads
Ouch! I did wonder the same but....while I didn't pay much it was more than a little.
As you'll have seen it isn't all cleaned up yet, if it get worse, as indeed it might, your option might have to be followed...ouch again!
Hey ho..a lesson about unseen eBay items perhaps.

The axle mount brackets can be replaced.
They are available from ESM. They are handed so you will need either a R/H or L/H bracket or both.

I would advise that you do nothing until you have cleaned up the whole axle and determined a final total of the corrosion. It may be so bad as to scrap the axle.
The area of the axle mount bracket is a notorious crud trap and should be cleaned on a regular basis.

My 1970 Traveller has a small pinhole in the right-hand axle mount area, but has so far survived years of use over rough country roads without any apparent problem (though I did wire-brush and rust-proof it as best I could to try to prevent it getting worse).
Not sure it could easily be welded without inadvertently setting light to the axle oil within, so I've just left it for the time being.
I have a spare axle just in case though...

I think we've all been there buying things which aren't as good as first thought.

Hi Peter, thanks for sharing this.
As a new 'Traveller' owner it's little snippets of information like this, that we should all be aware of.
Cheers Jonnie.

Hi,
Many thanks for the comments and suggestions.
Thanks Phil..I'd spotted the mounting pads on ESM too and breathed a sign of relief. Fabricating my own would have been a bind.
Does anyone know where I can find the angle they are set at when using the differential gasket face as a datum?
I guess I could measure from those on the casing but if the right angle is known it would save me a job.
Cheers

One of your pictures shows a couple of holes In the main axle below one of the brackets, don’t throw more good money at it !

Re: Rear axel - corrosion - mounting pads
Almost anything can be repaired. Replacement tube(s) and spring bracket(s) might be all it needs, even just a patch job, but by the time the parts have been machined, rewelded (in the correct orientation) etc, etc the economics of the job are likely poor, compared to a good part from the second hand market. Until you know the extent of the corrosion, you cannot sensibly decide which route to take.
If you are not sure, better to get a professional to inspect.
What was wrong with the original casing?
