Clutch 'pedal free movement' question

Post by Chill59 »

Following on from my post ...'New clutch ...vibe/noise'
How come the clutch 'pedal free movement' on my car (1098 pick up) can be so far off what the manual says it should be?
To recap: I first adjusted my new clutch to 35mm free pedal movement (workshop manual says 35-38mm).
This resulted in noise and vibration when depressing the clutch and not being able to select a gear.
On the advice of a mechanic friend, I adjusted it to give just 20mm free travel. The clutch is now quiet and I can engage gears.
I'm very pleased that it's cured the problem but I'm intruiged as to why there's such a big difference between what the manual says and the actual adjustment that works?
Have the dimensions of any replacement parts changed since the manual was written (the blue BL version) or what?
Or, as it's a pick up. Could it be that the floor (gearbox tunnel cover) in a commercial is in a slightly different position relative to the clutch pedal pivot?
Genuinley intruiged.
